“Then why won't you let me go?” Madeline asked.
“The company can run without me. You're forcing me to stay because I'm cheap. I'm free. All these years, you kept me around because I was a free maid, a free workhorse, a free blood bank. I'm sorry, I'm done.”
Madeline's tone was filled with coldness and pain.
A wave of suffocating despair washed over her.
She knew perfectly well that Lucius had stepped on her to build his career; she had willingly played the woman behind the scenes because she loved him.
But Lucius had trampled on her dignity, erased all her contributions, and focused solely on elevating that vicious homewrecker.
She never got the public acknowledgment she desired, yet Lucius gave Liliana the title of girlfriend and all his favoritism the very first day she returned to the country.
Her words made Lucius choke on his breath, the words stuck in his throat.
His brows knit together tightly.
“Madeline, I'm sorry.”
He finally realized, “I'm sorry I didn't go see your grandmother one last time.”
Madeline found it deeply ironic. A day late and a dollar short.
