It was Lucius calling.
Madeline answered.
Lucius asked, “Did you see what's on the internet?”
His tone was icy, swirling with dark, indiscernible emotions.
Madeline didn't know what he meant and hadn't even opened her mouth.
Lucius said, “It's not what they wrote. I can explain.”
Madeline's heart sank.
Thinking of explaining now—wasn't it a bit too late?
Madeline offered a bitter smile. “Explain what?”
“Lily and I... we aren't what you think,” Lucius suddenly said.
“Okay.”
Madeline replied calmly, without a second thought, “I believe you.”
Lucius had always known Madeline to be obedient, but this time, his heart inexplicably dropped.
He had expected Madeline to be hysterical, like the first time she found out about Leo's true parentage.
He had also expected her to be full of accusations, like after he failed to see her grandmother one last time.
But this time, Madeline was completely indifferent.
Even the most even-tempered woman couldn't tolerate her husband making out with another woman at a bar.
Yet Madeline neither cried nor caused a scene.
That was strange.
A bizarre feeling washed over Lucius's chest.
Madeline's breezy claim of trust didn't comfort him; it made him feel something was deeply wrong.
