"You... what did you just say to me!" Millicent exploded, rearing back as if to strike her.
But the heavy footsteps of the head butler echoing from the hallway stopped her dead in her tracks.
She took a few steps back, acutely aware that if this escalated and Arthur caught wind of it, there would be hell to pay.
The Whitman family's colossal empire could never be entrusted to an heir who carried a high risk of wrecking it with marital scandals.
Arthur had only ever married Millicent in his lifetime, not out of any profound love for her, but because he understood that starting a family and building an empire required focus. If a man spent too much energy on women, his business would inevitably suffer. And if a married man paraded around with affairs and mistresses, turning his home into a toxic battlefield, he would have zero energy left to expand his legacy.
That was precisely why Arthur loathed Alastair's reckless behavior, ruthlessly stripping him of his corporate shares and reducing him to a strict monthly allowance.
Lucius was still technically in his probationary period. If Arthur discovered what he was up to, Millicent couldn't even fathom the consequences.
Thinking of this, Millicent forced her expression into something slightly more tolerable.
Yet she remained furious. "Just go eat your dinner. And remember what you're supposed to say and what you need to keep your mouth shut about. If you can't even handle that, then don't bother showing your face around here again."
Madeline nodded. There wouldn't be a next time anyway.
Millicent scoffed. "I'm only letting you off the hook for my grandson's sake."
Madeline simply smiled faintly and didn't bother replying.
After dinner, Madeline tackled all the exhaustive preparations Millicent had dumped on her, working late into the night. By the time she finally emerged, she realized Lucius and Leo had arrived long ago.
Lucius was sitting with Arthur, sipping tea and chatting casually.
Leo was playing nearby. When the boy saw Madeline, he started to run toward her, but for whatever reason, he suddenly changed his mind, completely ignoring her as if she were invisible.
Madeline genuinely couldn't bring herself to care.
Having finished all her assigned chores, she picked out a guest room and prepared to go to sleep.
She certainly hadn't expected to find Lucius blocking the doorway to her chosen room.
His expression was cold and aloof as he stood there, silently watching her.
Madeline froze for a second. Just as she tried to walk past him, his hand shot out, clamping down hard on her wrist.
She looked up at him, and he lowered his gaze to meet hers, their eyes locking.
Lucius's eyes swirled with a chaotic mix of emotions.
"I got held up by some business earlier," he said softly. "Did you eat dinner?"
Madeline didn't answer.
Whether his 'business' was real or not made zero difference to her.
