Leo Flynn took a moment to process the sheer absurdity of it. "Wait, what do you mean? Did she actually go in there with you?"
Seraphina Vance's frustration boiled over, her voice trembling slightly at the end. "Raelynn is a professor. A professor at Kingsford University."
The playful smirk vanished from Leo's face. His expression froze into a mask of disbelief.
Beside them, Sebastian Croix paused imperceptibly, his dark gaze drifting toward the building in the distance.
"That's not a funny joke," Leo muttered. "Do you know what kind of institution Kingsford is? How old is Raelynn? Age aside, what exactly has she achieved to secure a position like that?"
It felt like the world had turned upside down.
Seraphina's face was grim. She didn't want to accept it either. It was utterly ridiculous.
But it was the truth.
"What's going on?" Julian asked as he approached. He had just finished a meeting with university officials and swung by on his way out. Seeing their darkened expressions, he assumed Seraphina had failed her interview.
Leo immediately turned to him. "Did you know Raelynn is a professor here?"
Julian stopped in his tracks, his brows knitting together. "What?"
"Crazy, right?" Leo scoffed. "Sera just said Raelynn was one of the interviewing professors."
Seraphina rubbed her temples, a sharp headache pulsing behind her eyes. "Yeah, she was. And she didn't hesitate to target me today. It's incredibly frustrating when you can't even get an objective evaluation when it matters most."
A storm of shock churned in Julian's mind, but he kept his composure.
Seraphina suddenly looked up at him. "Julian, do you know if there's some kind of backdoor deal happening? Because I can only think of one explanation."
He pointed out the obvious, shutting down their spiraling conspiracy theories. His utter lack of surprise—or perhaps his complete indifference to anything involving Raelynn—calmed Seraphina's racing heart.
He was right. Kingsford would have to publish the results.
Even if Raelynn had schemed her way into an honorary title based on a favor, a hollow position with no real authority wouldn't convince anyone in the academic world.
Sebastian stood up. "Let's head to the restaurant."
His calm demeanor reassured Seraphina. "Raelynn might have gotten lucky," she said, "but my scores won't be low. I'm ninety percent sure I'll get in."
The university had been releasing lists quickly over the past couple of years. Any petty tricks Raelynn tried to pull would be useless in the end.
Leo finally shook off his shock. The idea of Raelynn as a professor was still laughable. There had to be a catch, because there was no way she earned it on merit.

Sebastian, the man of few words.... needs to find all the words! Needs to fight for her! On note, seven years seems like a long time for this master plan (which I am sure goes back much farther). Rereading this novel, and it seems like everything has played out in a 5-8 month time span. And I feel like all Sebastian's doings/ plan have not been revealed. I hope we get to see the whole picture and have the resolutions we hope. But seven years of mistreatment, I just don't see Raelynn fully coming back. If these was 2-3 years, maybe, and I know it changes some characters around, but it would still work. Rooting for them!...
Literally on edge!...
No, no, no! Sebastian needs to nip the Zella situation and win Raelynn back! Also, Leo, he is a wildcard for Sebastian's master plan... Sebastian- we know you know, what we know, win your family back!...
I thought now Sebastian and Raelynn will be together now that seraphina is not but you are not letting them to be. Two new female around Sebastian 😭...
I think Ian is sly. He is not what he seems. Sebastian loves Raelyn and they have a daughter together. Besides he has no family to even take care of him. I feel Raelyn should realise that Sebastian is only her true love and go back to him....
The croix family is evil...
