Mason had completely lost whatever restraint he'd managed to scrape together.
The truth was, he actually wanted Alaric to visit often.
But this man seemed to be entirely heartless, failing to show up for the anniversary of Sebastian's passing year after year.
It took him five whole years to finally make an appearance.
How could a man like him ever be worthy of the sacrifice Sebastian had made?
"I've been busy," Alaric replied coldly, brushing off the hostility before turning his gaze back to the tombstone.
In the quiet confines of his mind, he spoke directly to his fallen friend.
*Seb, don't worry. The Valance bloodline didn't end with you. That woman left you a child. She's a little girl, and she's living with me now.*
*I'm going to make sure she grows up as the happiest little princess in the world. When she turns eighteen, I'll bring her here so you two can finally meet.*
*So please, rest in peace.*
He crouched down once more, pouring another measure of liquor onto the grass.
Watching him, Mason couldn't stomach it anymore. Rage boiling over, he shouted again.
"You didn't visit him because you were busy? If I were Seb, I'd rather have gouged my own eyes out than take a knife for you! What kind of brother are you? He's been dead for five years, and you're only showing up now?!"
"Alaric Foster, you are completely heartless!"
"Mason, stop yelling. You're disturbing him," Maisie intervened, gently pulling at her brother's arm.
Gideon chimed in as well. "Give it a rest, Mason."
Furious that everyone was still taking Alaric's side, Mason stormed off, violently kicking the stone edge of a nearby planter as he stewed in his anger.
Alaric silently admitted that he probably was heartless.
But his absence over the last five years wasn't out of a lack of desire to visit. It was because every single time he tried to leave the city on this day, Stella would inevitably suffer some sort of accident or sudden illness.
It had forced him to cancel his travel plans every single year.
Technically, Stella had suffered another accident this time around too.
But knowing the child was in stable condition, he had ruthlessly forced himself to get on the flight anyway.
Alaric firmly believed that once he told Sebastian about his daughter, his friend would understand.
