He quietly slipped into the room, locking the door behind him. Walking over to the bed, he found Debbie fast asleep.
He tapped her shoulder, keeping his voice to a hushed whisper. "Debbie, wake up... Debbie..."
Since Debbie had spent the last two days sleeping, it only took a couple of taps to rouse her.
The moment she opened her eyes and saw Lucas, a flicker of genuine relief crossed her face.
"It's you. How did you get in here?"
She had been awake for a day now, fully aware that she was in the hospital and effectively a prisoner of her own son.
Sebastian knew she was conscious, but he hadn't bothered to visit her once.
She knew he despised the sight of her, and she didn't push for it.
The truth was, the feeling was mutual.
Whenever they crossed paths, they looked more like mortal enemies than mother and son.
Seeing Lucas, however, was a different story. He represented her fantasy of reclaiming her freedom and living on her own terms.
"How are you feeling?" Lucas asked. "The nurses said you had major surgery."
Debbie tried to sit up but didn't have the strength. She settled for looking him up and down. "You got lucky, kid. You don't look injured at all. So why are you hospitalized? Internal injuries?"
"No," Lucas replied. "If I wasn't a patient, I'd never be able to see you.
This is the VIP ward. Unless I found a way to get admitted, I'd have no way in.
You look like you're holding up well. Why don't we find a chance to split the money in your account with Ms. Ward?"
At the mention of splitting the money, Debbie's eyes lit up. Since waking, her biggest anxiety had been her funds.
