Winter stood by the car door, her eyes locked on the man inside. “Fine. Say it.”
What could he possibly need to tell her in private?
Chris’s gaze flicked to the tip of her nose, red from the cold. A snowflake landed on her cheek and melted right away.
“Get in.”
He rolled the window up again.
Winter gritted her teeth at the tinted glass. She walked around the front of the car, yanked open the rear door, and climbed in.
The back seat was roomy. It was a long sedan, and Winter ended up sitting across from Chris.
The warmth hit her all at once. The cold in her bones started to fade, and she curled in slightly without meaning to. Her shoe nudged the cane he had set off to the side. She lifted her chin.
“You’re blocking my interview on purpose. What are you trying to pull?”
Chris lowered his eyes to where their knees were almost touching. “Come back to Blackwood Manor with me.”
Winter froze.
That was it?
A cold smile tugged at her mouth. She leaned closer, right into his space, and said each word clearly.” Not happening.”
Then a thought hit her. Her expression sharpened. “Did you have someone go get my suitcase again?”
Chris looked at her for a long beat. His eyes were dark and unreadable.

Every smile and every frown, even the way she looked when she was angry, was an addictive poison that was impossible to resist. It was only natural that Zac had gotten hooked.
As Winter started to lean back, Chris’s hand suddenly closed around the back of her neck and pulled her into him.
His warm, dry palm slid under the hem of her top and closed around her slim waist through her camisole, right where half the men at the auction had been staring all night.
“We’re not divorced,” he said, voice low. “So what exactly are you doing, moving out already?”
Winter pressed down over his hand at her waist and met his eyes without blinking. “I’m making myself look single. I’m giving other people a chance.”

Of course it wasn’t.
That kind of money wasn’t a casual gesture. It came with strings.
“You sold it to him?” Winter blurted. Her voice shook with a trace of panic.
The moment the words left her mouth, something in Chris’s expression shifted. The darkness in his eyes cracked open, and his face turned frighteningly cold.
“You want me to sell it to him that badly?” he asked.
He leaned closer. His cool breath brushed her skin. A thin, mocking smile curved at his lips.
“As if I’d ever do that.”
