Skyla said it without flinching. “If it were anything else, I’d never help her. But if she leaves the country, that only benefits me. It gets her out of Chris’s sight. Why wouldn’t I want that?”

The truth was, there were plenty of ways to make Winter “disappear.” But Winter had people protecting her. If Skyla tried anything direct, it would be messy.

Eveland was different. It was a war zone. Bad things happened every day, and no one could control what a stray bullet might do. If Winter never made it back, that would be best of all.

Jimmy was quiet for a few seconds. Then he said, “At least you’re honest.”

“You promised her two months to think it over,Skyla said. “But you’re not actually going to approve it in the end, are you?”

A flicker of surprise crossed Jimmy’s eyes.

He moved behind her and pushed her wheelchair over to the sofa. After he settled her there, he gave a short nod. “Eveland is dangerous right now. I gave her two months because I hoped she’d calm down and change her mind.”

So he really had been planning that.

“You’re looking out for her,” Skyla said, the edge in her voice breaking through, “but you’re not looking out. for me at all.”

“What are you talking about?” Jimmy’s voice jumped, sharp. His expression darkened instantly.

Skyla had never seen him lose his temper like that. She released her bitten lip. “I saw the photos in your study. A whole album of her mother. Am I wrong?”

“Who gave you permission to go through my things?”

Skyla flinched. Her eyes reddened. Jimmy seemed to realize he had gone too far. He turned away and forced his anger down.

Skyla took a breath. “If I’m wrong, prove it. You’re my uncle. If you won’t help me, who will? I love Chris. I want to be with him. Do you really want me to spend my life being called a homewrecker?”

Jimmy lifted a hand and pinched the bridge of his nose.

“Uncle Jimmy.” Skyla grabbed his hand, her voice shaking with grievance. “I already lost my freedom. I’m

As her wheelchair reached the door, she caught a faint sound from upstairs. A woman’s voice, sharp and short, muffled by distance.

It was so faint she would have missed it if she hadn’t happened to catch it.

Skyla’s eyes narrowed.

Jimmy was fifty and still unmarried. There was no woman in the house, only a cook.

So why had there been a woman’s voice upstairs?
