Chapter 122

Zion stepped up beside Winter. “Don’t take it personally, Ms. Scott. This is just how he is. He never takes off the mask or the cap.”
“It’s fine,” Winter said. “It’s not like this is our first time meeting.”
Last year, before she got pregnant, she had trained with him for a short time. He had shown up the same way back then too. Cap, mask, gloves. At first, she thought it was strange.
Later Zion told her the backstory. He met the man years ago overseas, back when Zion was working security jobs. The guy had always dressed like this. He was also born mute.
Zion said the man once saved his life. They didn’t stay in touch much anymore, but whenever Zion reached out, the man would show up, no matter where he was.
So when Winter said she wanted self–defense training, Zion immediately thought of the one person he trusted most.
If she was going to learn, she needed the best.
Winter walked over. The coach had already stood up. He was tall and strong, broad–shouldered with a lean waist. He wasn’t as bulky as Zion, but he still looked dangerous in a quiet way.
Winter held out her hand. “Coach. It has been a while. Thank you for helping me again.”
He shook her hand once and let go. He was just as distant as he had been before.
He pulled out a black phone, opened the Notes app, and typed a line.
“You want to learn combat?”
Winter nodded.
He typed again.
“Your foundation is too weak. You need to start with basic strength training. Otherwise, any moves you learn will just be for show.”
With less than six weeks before her departure, Winter felt a surge of impatience.
“Can we do both?” she asked. “Can I practice moves while I build strength? Even if it is not perfect, it still helps, right?”
She looked at him hopefully.
His gaze left her face. He lowered his head and typed.
She saw the first few words and felt a rush of relief.
“It does help.”
The coach handed her a clean white towel and held up his phone again.
“We will stop here for today. Don’t rush it.”
Winter took the towel and wiped the sweat from her face. “Thank you. You’re right. I can’t handle much more tonight.”
She muttered under her breath, “My waist is still sore.”
After she drank some water, she looked up. He had picked up his jacket and was clearly about to leave.
“One more question,” she said. “What should I address you?”
He was essentially her mentor now, and it felt impolite not to even know his name.
He paused. He looked back at her. His deep brown eyes seemed colder than before.
Winter noticed immediately. She stopped pushing.
People like him had rules. They had their own boundaries.
