Chapter 127

A piece that had still been mostly intact finally snapped clean in two.

At last, Winter dropped into a crouch and started digging through the wreckage with both hands. A nail sliced her fingertip. Blood dotted the wet wood. She didn’t even seem to feel it. She kept her head down and moved faster, frantic.

“Winnie!” Zac tried to pull her back to herself, but she didn’t react at all.

He crouched beside her and tossed aside any boards with exposed nails, keeping them away from her hands. He took her bleeding fingers in his, then used his other hand to search the debris with her.

Finally, her hands stopped.

Half–buried in the rubble was a square wooden sign with carefully rounded corners. Time and weather had peeled most of the paint away, but the carved words were still readable, letter by letter.

“Winnie’s Secret Hideout”

Winter stared at it, frozen.

Then tears spilled over.

She grabbed the sign and pressed it tight to her chest, like she could hold herself together that way. Her heart felt like it had been ripped out.

Her dad had carved those words with her, guiding her hand stroke by stroke.

Her legs shook as she stood.

The wind lifted her hair and blew the strands away from her temple, exposing the bruise from the earlier impact. What had been reddish–purple had darkened into a deep blue bruise against her pale skin.

Under the covered entryway, Chris’s eyes tightened.

“Why?” Winter demanded, barely above a whisper.

She would be leaving the country in less than six weeks. Skyla knew that. Skyla also knew Winter was done with Chris. So why did she have to twist the knife at the last second?

Skyla spoke calmly. “The treehouse was old and unsafe. It was a hazard. Taking it down was for safety.”

“If you’re so afraid of dying, why don’t you just move out!” Winter’s voice shot up, sharp and raw.

The sudden coldness in her aura made Skyla’s brow twitch. “I’ve already explained this to you. The environment here is perfect for my recovery. I’m truly sorry about destroying your childhood memories.”

Truly sorry.

Winter’s lips curved into a bitter, mocking smile.

Gavin stepped forward.

Skyla immediately reached for Chris’s wrist, but Gavin moved behind her and pushed her wheelchair

back into the house.

“Gavin, what are you doing?” Skyla snapped.

She tried to press the control buttons, but Gavin stopped her hand.

Under the covered entryway, Winter watched Skyla being taken away. Her body swayed, and Zac caught her from behind, an arm around her shoulders to keep her upright. Behind him stood Zion and several Davis family bodyguards.

Winter lifted her eyes to Chris, the man who had burned her from the inside out. Her voice went ice–cold.

“Chris Xander, how long do you think you can protect her?”

Chris’s gaze flicked to Zac’s arm around Winter’s shoulders. His voice was calm, but it carried a lethal

chill.

“Taking down the treehouse was my order.”
