Chapter 129

A single tear escaped the corner of Winter’s eye and fell onto the pillow.

Zac’s breath hitched.

“Winnie, you’re awake?”

It was already late at night. Skyla looked out through the floor–to–ceiling window at Gavin, who was outside sorting through the broken pieces of the treehouse.

She looked away and turned back to the table. The dishes had already gone cold, along with the bowls of rice pudding.

It was a holiday, and earlier that day, she had called Chris and asked him to come over and try the warm rice pudding she had made herself.

He had told her on the phone that he was busy.

That evening, Gavin had arrived at Westbury with a group of men and said Chris had ordered the treehouse torn down to prevent any safety risk.

She had thought Chris was coming too, but it was only Gavin.

She missed Chris so much that she called him again, but from early evening until eight–thirty, she called

him thrice and he never answered.

Later, she sent him a message: “I even made your favorite dishes. I was waiting for you so we could have dinner together and have some rice pudding after. If you don’t come, I won’t even feel like eating.”

Chris did reply, just as she had hoped. “Okay.”

But in the end, he never got a single bite.

A car engine sounded from the courtyard. At this hour, Skyla could only think of one person it might be. Her eyes lit up, and she spun her wheelchair around so fast she nearly tipped out of it.

“Ms. Jasper, please don’t rush,” The caregiver hurried over and steadied her upper body.

Skyla smiled, then fixed her hair and clothes. “Go see if Chris is here.”

The caregiver looked toward the door, then turned back to Skyla with a smile in her eyes. “It’s Mr.

Xander.”

Skyla’s lips curved upward at once. She pointed at the rice pudding on the table. “Clear all of this away and bring out two fresh hot bowls.”

The caregiver carried the bowls into the kitchen.

Skyla stirred the bowl in her hands and looked at Chris gently. “Why don’t you sit down and taste it? See if you like it.”

Chris didn’t sit. With one hand gripping his cane, he slowly turned and headed for the door, leaving behind just one sentence in a voice as cold as ice.

“Don’t ever send Winter another message.”

The spoon slipped from Skyla’s hand and sank into the hot rice pudding. In the reflection of the floor–to- ceiling window, her face had gone pale.

In the early hours of the morning, the study at Blackwood Manor was still lit.

Gavin knocked and entered. The room was thick with cigarette smoke.

Step by step, he walked behind Chris, who was standing in front of the floor–to–ceiling window smoking.

In his hand was a rusted metal box that looked like it had been there for years.

“Mr. Xander, just as you expected, there was indeed something buried beneath the treehouse.”
