Fabian smiled and said, “Since we’ve already crossed paths tonight, Mr. Xander, why not stay for a drink?”
Chris felt Winter behind him go still for a beat, and a faint smile touched his lips.
“Mr. Kane, after you.”
The ease and composure in every one of Chris’s movements clearly took Fabian by surprise.
The head of the Xander family really was no ordinary man.
Fabian turned his head slightly and glanced toward the person Gavin was leading away to the elevator, but before he could make out anything beyond the edge of a face, the doors had already closed.
Back in the private room, everything on the table besides the liquor had already been cleared away.
It looked like nothing more than an ordinary gathering.
Fabian motioned for Chris to take a seat. “Mr. Xander, please.”
Inside the elevator, Gavin cast a cool glance at Zion, who was standing beside Winter.
“Ms. Scott, you’re not hurt, are you?”
Thankfully, Gavin and Winter had already come to an understanding. Whenever she went undercover, he would stay out of sight and follow from a distance. The moment anything went wrong, he would step in. Otherwise, if Chris hadn’t shown up tonight, Winter probably would have been taken by Fabian’s men before Gavin could get to her.
Winter shook her head, though she seemed distracted.

The three of them stepped out, and Gavin held out an arm to stop Zion.
“You’re done here.”
“What do you mean I’m done here?” Zion tried to brush past him and head for Winter. “Protecting Ms. Scott is my job.”
Gavin gave him a cool look. “Wait in the car.”
Zion sucked in a sharp breath and looked down in disbelief. Somehow, his legs had already turned him

“Someone in the Xander family is working with Fabian Kane. You should look into it.”
If she could help root out the rot inside the Xander family, it would at least repay the debt she owed them for raising her all those years.
As for anything else, she had nothing left to say to Chris.
More than that, she didn’t even want to see him.
She let her hair fall loose, then moved past the shadow and headed for the door in the dim light.
But suddenly, a hand came down against the door in front of her.
It slid slowly downward. The instant his cool fingertips brushed the back of her hand, Winter jerked away as if she had been burned, and his hand closed over the doorknob instead.
His familiar cool voice sounded right beside her ear.
“You never suspected me?”
Winter clenched her fingers and said flatly, “I may have been blind when it came to love, but that doesn’t mean I can’t tell right from wrong.”
When it came to something like this, she had never once doubted where Chris drew the line.
