Chapter 147
So after the gunfire started, he had been by Winter’s side the whole time?
Wasn’t he supposed to be getting divorced?
Wasn’t she supposed to be leaving the country?
Then why was Chris still clinging to her?
Skyla suddenly said to the bodyguard, “Go help the Xander family’s men deal with those attackers in black. I’ll be fine here.”
“But Ms. Jasper…”
“No more excuses. Just go!” Skyla’s face darkened. Her fingers dug so hard into her palm that even drawing blood couldn’t ease the hatred burning inside her.
But the moment the words left her mouth, another gunshot rang out. The bodyguard immediately stepped in front of them. “Hurry and get Ms. Jasper inside. Hide now.”
The caregiver didn’t waste a second. She pushed the wheelchair and rushed inside as fast as she could.
But at the corner, she seemed to trip over something. She cried out and fell hard to the ground, her head hitting the edge of a flower bed and leaving her dizzy.
The gunfire gradually died down. By the time Gavin had escorted Mrs. Xander Sr. to safety and led the remaining bodyguards in closing in on the masked men, the sudden attack was finally over.
But just as everyone started to relax, the disarmed men in black suddenly began convulsing.
Winter instinctively stepped back, but her back hit Chris’s chest, and the grip around her wrist tightened
again.
It all happened in the blink of an eye. The seven or eight men dropped to the ground, their bodies twitching a few times before going stiff.
Then they stopped moving completely.
Gavin quickly crouched down to check on them, his face turning grim.
“They took poison beforehand!”
A cold gust of wind stirred the gunpowder in the air, the smoke drifting in thin wisps through the sunlight. Chris’s cool gaze swept over the seven or eight bodies already lying dead on the ground.
They were all trained killers ready to die.
The caregiver pushed the wheelchair forward while shouting in panic, “Mr. Xander, please save Ms. Jasper. She was hit in the shoulder. She’s losing so much blood!”
On the wheelchair, the shoulder of Skyla’s white cashmere coat was soaked red with blood. Her head had fallen to one side, and she was barely conscious. Her whole face was deathly pale.
Hearing his voice, she weakly opened her eyes. The moment she saw Chris, it was as if a faint light came back into them. Her pale lips slowly curved.
“Chris… thank God you’re okay. I was so worried about you.”
Winter felt the grip on her wrist tighten slightly.
She bit her lower lip.
Then, just as she expected, the hand holding her wrist loosened.
The cold wind brushed against her suddenly empty wrist.
She watched Chris’s broad back as he hurried toward Skyla.
