Chapter 175
There was no evidence left that could clear the Scott family.
He had been digging for years, and every piece of evidence had led back to them.
This was the last time.
The black box data would settle everything.
Warren Scott had always personally overseen the private jet Chris’s parents traveled on.
Warren was ambitious and hungry for power. He had worked with criminal groups along the border to kill Chris’s parents, only to be brought down by those same forces in the end. The Scott family’s bankruptcy followed soon after. In a way, it was his punishment.
Maybe that was the only thing left that could comfort Chris’s parents in heaven.
Still shaken, Zion ran after Winter.
He had never imagined she could move that fast. If Gavin had reacted even a second later, the car would have hit her.
She had completely lost it.
What could have pushed her this far? What could have made her so desperate that she would throw her life away for it?
The front of the car had stopped less than two feet from her.
When Gavin slammed on the brakes, the force of it felt like a hard gust of wind punching straight through her.
Winter stared through the windshield at the face in the back seat. It was the same face she had once dreamed about over and over as a lovestruck girl.
Now, just looking at him made her chest ache.
She had come for an answer from Chris.
The car door opened.
Chris stepped out. The snow along the roadside had melted during the day, and the ground was still wet, black and slick in the night.
Behind his glasses, his eyes were dark and unreadable.
“Have you lost your mind?”
“Did my dad kill your parents?”
They spoke at the same time.

Winter’s voice was so faint it almost seemed to drift apart in the wind, but every word reached Chris with brutal clarity.
It was soft, but it hit him like a storm. The blood in his body seemed to freeze.
Zion, standing closest to Winter, froze too. Then he looked at Chris in disbelief, stunned by the cold, crushing weight in his presence.
Gavin’s hand stopped on the car door.
Even as a child, Chris had been a little proud and aloof.
But in every gesture, every expression, it was obvious he had grown up deeply loved. He would make faces at the camera. He would always give the first bite of cake to his mother.

As a child, Chris had been a good boy.
The kind of boy who looked like he would grow up into a warm, decent man.
