Chapter 178
Winter’s eyes stung. She looked at the photo of Chris for a moment in silence, then tapped on Skyla’s profile and blocked her.
She scrolled through her contacts and opened her chat with Roy.
“Roy, are you free at seven tonight? If you are, let’s meet at the gym.”
By the time she got to the station, Roy still hadn’t replied.
After she was dragged online yesterday and torn apart by public criticism, the network had given her a few days off. Officially, it was so she could rest. In reality, they were trying to protect the station’s reputation.
She understood, and she went along with it.
What she hadn’t expected was that after Chris publicly acknowledged their marriage yesterday, the station’s top executive would call her personally first thing this morning and ask her to come back to
work.
Right now, work was the only thing that could keep her overactive mind numb.
The news department’s internal archive held years of old records. Many things that could no longer be
found online were still there.
It didn’t take Winter long to pull up the news reports about the accident that killed Chris’s parents.
The photos were already twenty years old, and the resolution was poor, but she recognized him immediately. A young Chris stood beside the wreckage of the plane, his small figure swallowed by the gray of a rainy day.
He must have been crying.
A heavy ache pressed against Winter’s chest. Her fingers trembled as she closed the page.
Around lunchtime, she drove back to the Xander estate.
At this hour, Mrs. Xander Sr. usually hadn’t gone down for her nap yet. Winter wanted to see her.
She parked in the courtyard.
Mr. White was pouring kibble for General, smiling as he patted the dog on the head.
The moment General heard her, he took off running toward her and nearly knocked her over.
The heaviness in Winter’s chest seemed to ease for a moment. For that brief instant, she actually felt a little lighter.

Hugging General, she smiled and said, “Mr. White, don’t feed him so much. He’s getting fat.”
Guilt and shame came rushing over her. For the first time, Winter realized she couldn’t even face Mrs.
Xander Sr. who had loved her all these years.
Then suddenly, a photo slipped loose and fell to the floor.
Mrs. Xander Sr. turned her head to look.
“Don’t move, Grandma,” Winter said as she quickly walked over and crouched down to pick it up.
She was just about to hand it back when her eyes stopped on the picture.
