Chapter 194
He stepped onto the last stair and stopped just out of sight around the corner. From there, he watched the two men inside as they got louder and filthier with every word.
A drop of cold sweat slid down his temple.
He had clearly seen three men come upstairs.
So why were there only two now?
Where was the third?
Then the rough-looking man who had been ordering the young guard around stood up. He grinned crudely and rubbed his hands together.
“I’m going downstairs. Might as well put my hands on her while I’m at it.”
Zac’s expression changed.
There was no time left.
Bang. Bang, Bang.
Upstairs, curses and gunshots rang out at the same time. The sound made Winter’s heart slam against
her ribs.
Then suddenly, someone came crashing down the stairs.
It was Zac.
Winter’s whole body went cold. She scrambled to her feet and ran over, her face turning white when she saw blood spreading across his chest.
“Zac!”
Zac covered the wound with one hand so she wouldn’t see too much. The veins on the back of his other hand stood out sharply as he braced himself against the floor and struggled to sit up.
The rough-looking man came downstairs with a gun still smoking in his hand. He spat to the side and cursed.
“Damn it. You actually shot at us. You really think you’re still safe just because this is Liono City?”
He cocked the gun and raised it, ready to shoot Zac again.
“Stop!”
Winter threw herself in front of Zac, breathing hard. “Aren’t you taking me to Fabian Kane for the reward? If I die, what are you supposed to hand over to him?”
“Winnie!” Zac shouted, trying to pull her behind him.
Pain shot through her back.
Winter looked up and saw Zac being held at gunpoint by the man from the wheelhouse. A cold, hopeless feeling closed over her.
Bang.
A bullet tore through the cabin window and hit the man holding Zac straight in the chest.
The sound of helicopter blades grew louder overhead.
A sleek black helicopter was hovering above the yacht.
Inside the open cabin door, a steady hand held a sniper rifle. Behind the scope, a pair of cold black eyes was fixed on Winter’s pale face as she struggled to stay calm.
A split second later, another bullet came through the broken window.
The rough-looking man reacted on instinct and lunged toward Winter, trying to grab her as a hostage.
But the bullet cut straight through his throat before he could reach her.

He never even got the chance to scream.
