Winter’s lips were trembling. The moment she parted them, Chris forced his way in, kissing her hard and
deep
He gripped the back of her neck and pressed his forehead against hers. His voice came out rough, dragged through clenched teeth.
“Did those bastards touch you?”
His breath was so hot it almost drowned her. In that moment, Winter forgot everything else. She answered on instinct.
“No…”
Chris stared at her reddened eyes. The second she spoke, his breathing turned ragged. He lowered his head again and sucked hard on her lips, which had finally regained a little color.
Outside the white house, violent wind drove sheets of rain across the island. The waves rose higher and higher. Walls of water slammed against the shore with thunderous force. Floodwater tore through the island like a giant serpent, making the whole place seem to tremble.
The light in the upstairs room went out.
Chris shoved Winter back into the corner of the wall, breathing hard.
“Winter…”
In the darkness, neither of them could see the other clearly.
“Why… why did you save me?” Winter’s voice came out broken. She bit down hard, trying to keep the ache inside from spilling over.
“You shouldn’t have come for me, Chris. You really shouldn’t have. What am I supposed to do now?” she thought bitterly.
Her nails dug into his shoulder and back. Hot tears rolled from her eyes and hit his strong forearm, then slid along the tight lines of his muscles before dripping to the floor.
Without a word, Chris grabbed one of her legs and wrapped it around his waist. His movements turned even rougher, leaving her unable to speak.
Realizing what he meant to do, Winter braced both hands against his chest. In the darkness, her eyes were full of tears as she cried out,
“Is there even a little part of you that…”
“Stop.”
In the dim, flickering room, Chris’s expression darkened. He pressed a hand hard against the back of her head and forced her into another kiss, cutting off the rest of her words.

The wind howled outside. The window glass rattled under the force of it.
Then suddenly Chris brought her to the window and turned her around. Standing behind her, he gripped her chin and forced her to look out at the terrifying storm.
The caregiver said excitedly, “Do you think Mr. Xander might come in person?”
That had to be it. With how much Chris cared about Skyla, there was no way he wouldn’t come himself on the day she was discharged.
She had to make sure Skyla looked beautiful.
Thinking that, she hurried to the closet in the hospital room and took out two outfits, holding them up beside Skyla one after the other.
“The white one is prettier. You always look best in white. It suits you so well.”
The caregiver’s eager flattery did nothing to lift Skyla’s mood.
If anything, her fingers only tightened more and more.
She felt restless and uneasy, as if something had happened.

A terrible feeling settled over her.
And this clueless woman in front of her just kept flattering her without noticing a thing.
“Ms. Jasper, what do you think? Should I help you change into this one?”
