Game Over, Mr. CEO: Your Wife Is Done (Winter and Chris) novel Chapter 200

Zac lifted his eyes and looked at Chris, who was leaning against the doorframe in hiking boots, his head nearly brushed the top of it.

His hair was slightly messy, but not in a sloppy way. If anything, he looked unusually refreshed, like a man who had finally gotten what he wanted. The sleeves of his black shirt were pushed up, exposing pale, strong forearms lined with tight muscle.

That question had been on Zac’s mind ever since he saw Chris arrive over the ocean in that helicopter. He had known Chris since they were young. Chris wasn’t the kind of man who had time to waste, and he definitely wasn’t the kind to risk his life on impulse. But once he decided on something, nothing short of death could change his mind.

He had gone to all this trouble just to save Winter.

Other than love, Zac could think of no other reason.

For a moment, the air seemed to freeze. Chris’s expression turned even colder.

Clang Clang. Clang.

Just then, a loud rattling noise came from the metal staircase leading down from the second floor, as if something had rolled or slipped.

Winter had made the noise on purpose to break the strange silence downstairs. But her legs were weak, and she was moving too quickly and too nervously. She nearly lost her footing on the stairs.

The edge of the staircase was loose in places, and the rusted metal didn’t sit flush anymore. Every step she took made a sharp clanging sound that echoed through the whole house.

The bodyguards downstairs and Gavin all looked up at the sound.

When Winter realized everyone was staring at her, she lowered her head, trying to hide her panic behind a look of awkward embarrassment.

Chris watched her from under lowered eyes. His jaw tightened.

Winter walked right past him as if nothing had happened.

A scene flashed through Chris’s mind.

He had pinned her against the window and made her look out at the storm over the sea. In the middle of that desperate, all-consuming intimacy, he had asked her if dying there together might not be so bad.

At the time, tears had been running down her face. Her voice had been hoarse from crying.

She had answered him with only one word.

“Yes.”

Now the slight rasp in her voice made his brow tighten.

“Zac, how are you feeling?”

Winter walked over to the makeshift bed.

Zac gave a faint smile. He had run a high fever in the middle of the night, but she had been asleep then, and no one had wanted to wake her. He had no intention of telling her now.

eating.

Gavin moved the better food to her side of the table.

“His eyes…”

Gavin’s hand paused. He heard the hesitation in her voice.

She swallowed the bread in her mouth. Her lowered eyes were full of tension, and beneath that, a faint thread of hope.

“His eyes… have they already…?”

“Mr Xander’s eyesight has already recovered,” Gavin said.

The plastic wrapper crackled in her hand as her grip tightened.

Her eyes burned.

She took another hard bite of the bread.
