Game Over, Mr. CEO: Your Wife Is Done (Winter and Chris) novel Chapter 202

The woman in the photo was someone Winter had never seen before. She wasn’t strikingly beautiful, but she had a quiet, gentle prettiness. She looked soft–spoken and well–behaved.

A faint dimple touched the corner of her smile, making her look sweet and warm.

Chris’s hair was cut short. His features looked a little sharper than they did now, but the slight curve of his lips softened some of that cold, distant edge.

Their shoulders were almost touching in the formal studio photo.

The longer Winter looked at it, the more it resembled the kind of picture a couple might take for a marriage certificate.

The questions that had been growing in her heart suddenly seemed to have an answer, or at least part of one. Winter stood there staring at the photo, lost in thought.

No wonder Chris knew there was an island nearby.

No wonder he had seemed so familiar with this place.

And there were women’s clothes in the closet. There was no doubt about it. They had belonged to the woman in the photo.

They had lived here together.

The moment that thought hit her, the door behind her creaked open.

Startled out of her daze, Winter jumped, and the photo slipped from her hand to the floor.

Chris’s gaze paused on her startled face. Then he looked down and saw the photo on the ground. His brow tightened slightly, and he crossed the room in a few long strides.

Winter came back to herself and crouched down to pick it up, but the soreness in her waist slowed her just enough.

Chris got there first.

His fingers closed around the photo.

“Was this from when you were in the military?” Winter asked. Even she hadn’t expected her voice to shake like

that.

Chris had enlisted at eighteen. She had been thirteen then.

When she was seven, he had once rescued her from a locked bathroom at school. That was where it had started.

The feelings she buried back then completely took root when she was thirteen and he left Liono City.

Chris was allowed one phone call home each month.

Luckily, every one of those calls came on the weekend, which meant she could curl up beside Mrs. Xander Sr. and secretly listen to his voice.

Later, he mailed a photo home from the military.

It had been about six months after he enlisted.

His skin was a little darker then. His hair was cropped short. His features were sharp, and those cold, dark eyes

seemed to look straight through the photo and into her. At thirteen, just looking at him made her heart race.

That night, she couldn’t fall asleep at all.

Later, she begged Mrs. Xander Sr. to let her keep the photo. After that, she took it out from under her pillow every single night just to look at it.

Once, after secretly kissing it, she buried her face in the blanket and kicked her legs like she had gone crazy.

The Chris in that photo looked exactly like the Chris in this one.

Chris looked at her with dark, unreadable eyes and gave a quiet hum. “I worked undercover on this island.”

Winter remembered that this was the only room in the house with a bed.

And there was only one bed.

She was a reporter. She knew very well the kinds of sacrifices undercover work could require.

Especially in a case dangerous enough to need someone like Chris to go undercover, his cover would have had to be completely real.

Thinking of that, and of the kind of photo this was, she felt a sharp sting in her chest. “Did you pretend to be husband and wife?”

“She was an informant.”

The answer lodged in her throat and left her feeling strangely unsettled.

Winter wanted to ask more. But then she remembered how many times she had said she wanted a divorce. She was already planning to leave Liono City, so what right did she have to dig into Chris’s past now?

The color drained from her lips. She nodded once.

“I understand.”

“Burn it,Chris said, handing him the photo.

Chris’s voice dropped. “I had them heat up a bucket of water for you. Take a shower, then sleep.”

When Winter still didn’t move, he said flatly, “If you don’t use the water, no one can drink it anyway. So stop worrying about that.”

Being stranded on a deserted island and still getting to take a hot shower felt almost unreal. Since Chris had already said that much, she stopped arguing. If she waited any longer, the water would go cold.

She turned and shut the bathroom door behind her.

But the house had been abandoned for too long, and the bathroom lock was broken.

The moment she closed the door, the latch popped back open.

She shut it again. It opened again.

After trying three times, she reached for a chair to brace against the door. Just then, a hand closed around the knob from the other side and held the door shut.

Through the frosted glass, she could make out the tall, blurred shape of a man standing outside.

Clearly, Chris was holding it closed for her.

The heat from the water had already made her eyes sting slightly. She pressed her lips together, trying to hold down the swelling ache in her chest, all the feelings she had nowhere to put.

Then she looked away and quickly started taking off her clothes.

Outside, Chris kept one hand on the handle, his sharp hearing picking up every sound inside.

The pull of a zipper.

The soft drop of her coat.

The rustle of clothes being taken off. Her sweater. Her pants.

Then the faint snap of elastic.

Her bra.

A second later, the sound of running water filled the bathroom.

Chris swallowed once, his hand tightening on the doorknob.
