Chapter 212
His cold, merciless words hit Winter like a blade of ice through the heart.
“No! I want to see Grandma. Let me see her one last time.”
Gavin looked at Chris, his expression grim. Chris didn’t even turn around. His hand hung stiff at his side, his fingers clenched so tightly the knuckles had gone white.
Gavin looked away, stepped forward, and blocked Winter as she tried to rush into the room. In a low voice, he said, “Mrs. Xander, please step outside.”
“No!” Winter clutched at Gavin’s wrist with all her strength, her voice raw from sobbing. “Please, Gavin, let me through. I need to see Grandma. Just let me see her. Please…”
Gavin’s face tightened. He shook his head without a word and reached for her arm to lead her away.
But Winter suddenly dropped to her knees.
“I won’t go in. I won’t go in to see Grandma. Just don’t make me leave. I can kneel outside. I’ll stay far away. I’ll just kneel there. Please don’t send me away.”
The second Steve saw her kneel, his expression darkened and he started toward her.
Sasha shoved him aside and hurried over to help Winter up from the floor.
The moment Winter saw Sasha, her tears came even harder. “Aunt Sasha, I want to see Grandma. Please let me see her.”
“Winnie,” Sasha said, her own eyes red as she tried to calm her, “you’re too upset right now. You were just rescued and haven’t even had a chance to rest. Go lie down for a while, okay? Chris still can’t accept that Grandma is gone. He’s not in a good place right now. Just give him a little time. Be good.”
Winter only shook her head, tears streaming down her face.
No one else knew the truth.
Mrs. Xander Sr. had learned that Warren was the one responsible for Chris’s parents‘ deaths, and her already fragile body couldn’t handle the shock and grief.
Chris was never going to be okay.
From inside the room, Chris’s voice rang out, sharp and cold. “Get her out!”
Tears hit the floor one after another. Winter pulled free from Sasha’s hand, stumbled to the doorway, and dropped to her knees with a hard thud. “Chris, I’m begging you.”
That was exactly why William hadn’t called her. He knew she would be busy.
But in the room, the only women from the family were Sasha and Chris’s aunt.
Even after William paid his respects to Mrs. Xander Sr., he still hadn’t seen Winter. After offering his condolences, he turned to Sasha and asked, “Aunt Sasha, where’s Winnie?”
Sasha only shook her head, her expression unreadable. “By the side gate.
William’s heart tightened. He turned and strode toward the side gate of the Xander estate.
The side gate was usually kept locked year–round. Since it was bolted from the inside, William couldn’t get through that way, so he had to circle back and go around from the front entrance.
It was a long walk from the front gate to the side gate, and the road was lined with parked cars, so driving over was not practical.
William ran the whole way there.
Sure enough, Winter was there, dressed in black, kneeling outside the side gate with her head bowed.
