Behind the flames, the sound of approaching engines could be heard faintly.
Fabian led his men around the red–roofed house. Two vans were parked behind it.
He shoved Winter into one of them. She didn’t fight back, because she knew struggling would be useless. Given the situation, Fabian wouldn’t kill her right away. She had to wait for another chance to escape before he took her to the border.
On the other side of the flames, a badly injured bodyguard crawled out of one of the wrecked cars. Unsteady on his feet, he braced himself against the twisted door and looked up at the car speeding toward him.
The license plate flashed past his eyes.
It was Mr. Xander.
Chris shoved the door open and got out. Wind from the docks pushed thick smoke around them. He grabbed the bodyguard’s arm and asked in a low, harsh voice, “Where is Winter?”
“I’m sorry, Mr. Xander. Mrs. Xander was taken by Fabian. They got into a vehicle and headed west…”
The car door slammed shut.
Chris’s car tore off toward the west.
After learning that Winter’s car had headed toward the outskirts, he had already ordered his men to work with the police and block every exit out of Liono City.
Fabian had probably gotten word by now. As long as he was still inside Liono City, he was trapped.
To the west was a newly built high–speed rail line that hadn’t opened yet. The surrounding construction barriers were still in place, so cars couldn’t get through.
The only possible way forward was through the barren hills beside the station. Beyond them lay a stretch of mountains leading out of Liono City.
Cars couldn’t get through there.
But helicopters could.
If Chris could get there by helicopter, so could Fabian.
And once Fabian made it past that area, he would be outside Liono City’s jurisdiction. His influence reached several other cities. Chris had people he trusted in those places, but he could not leave Winter’s life in anyone else’s hands.
Chris floored the gas and dialed an emergency number.
When the call connected, he said in a low voice, “Get the armed helicopters ready. Notify Gavin.”
The explosion and gunfire during Skyla’s rescue could not be covered up. Dominic soon received the news.
He knew the villa belonged to Chris.
Dominic stopped.
He had known Chris for thirty years, but he had never heard Chris say his name like that.
A terrible feeling rose in him.
Fabian had taken Winter for one reason only. He wanted to use her against Chris.
And with a vicious drug lord like Fabian holding Winter hostage, this rescue could easily become a death trap.
Chris’s voice came through again.
“Go to Xander Hospital and find Dr. Lucas. Help me look after someone.”
Dominic’s heart seemed to stop.
“Look after who?”
Chris’s voice dropped, quiet and solemn.
“Harvey Xander. My son with Winter.”
