Chapter 42
The men followed Winter into the elevator and walked her out of the building before climbing into a van and driving off.
The moment she stepped into the department, she was hit with a wave of chatter.
“Overdose. Drug–related,” a colleague muttered. “When the police got there, the VIP room was a mess. Jacob still had a syringe in his arm. There was even some left in it. Guess he got carried away. His body just couldn’t handle it.”
The media always had its sources. Even with the police keeping the official cause of death under wraps, the newsroom had already pieced together what happened.
Winter paused mid–step.
She had once gone undercover at the club Jacob ran, the one that had since been shut down. He and his group had used drugs to control vulnerable young men and women. She hadn’t expected that he used them himself.
If that was how he died, then maybe it was karma.
She had just taken her seat when a message popped up from Sam.
“Come to my office.”
When she entered, Sam motioned for her to close the door.
The secrecy made her uneasy, but she did as told.
“Mr. Quinn, you wanted to see me?”
Sam lifted an eyebrow at the formality.
Most days, she teased him by calling him “King Sam.” she called him “Sam.” If something was bothering her, she switched to “Mr. Quinn.” And when she was truly in a foul mood, she went all the way to “Editor- in–Chief Quinn.”
After working together for so many years, he had learned to gauge her mood just by how she addressed
him.
“Jacob is dead. What’s your take?”
Winter shrugged. “I’m not a coroner or a cop. What exactly do you expect me to say? If you really want my professional opinion, then sure. From a news perspective, it’s explosive.”
Sam clicked his tongue and cut her off. “Drop the act. I know you were the one who put Jacob in the hospital back then. You had me thinking you’d accepted the Jasper family’s compensation, and then you turned around and went after him. Are you trying to get yourself killed?”
Winter rubbed the tip of her nose. So he had found out.

“Call it a celebration,” he said solemnly.
Winter burst out laughing.
After work, the team split into three cars and headed to Nocturne, the largest nightlife club in Liono City.
Not far away, a black sedan cruised past the parking lot outside the club.
Through the open window, Chris glanced up and watched the group disappear inside. His expression
was calm, but his eyes were dark and unreadable. His fingers tapped lightly against the armrest.
