Winter’s cheeks were flushed pink from the alcohol.
“I’m getting divorced because I’m happy,” she declared loudly. “If I’m happy, why can’t I say it out loud?”
Then she suddenly giggled. “Do you guys know why I’m getting divorced?”
Everyone at the table lived for gossip. They had been too polite to ask, but now that she brought it up herself, someone quickly stepped in.
“Why?” a colleague asked carefully. “Was it relationship issues?”
Winter shook her head.
Then she paused. That didn’t feel right. So she nodded.
Then she frowned. That didn’t feel right either.
“Because my husband,” she said dramatically, leaning forward, “he- can’t do it!”
She abruptly stood up, swaying slightly and covering her mouth. “I think I’m going to throw up.”
Wendy stared at her, stunned for a full second. Then she rolled her eyes and grabbed Winter by the arm. ”
Come on.”
Unbeknownst to Winter, her loud announcement had coincided perfectly with the split–second gap between songs. Those few seconds of silence were more than enough for everyone in the vicinity to hear her loud and clear.
Sam cleared his throat. The male coworkers cleared theirs too. The women exchanged looks that were
far too knowing.
At the booth next to them, Dominic let out a low whistle and glanced sideways at the man beside him.
Chris sat calmly, taking a slow sip of his drink.
Dominic opened his mouth to speak, but Chris suddenly set his glass down with a sharp clink.
“Where are you going?” Dominic asked, clearly entertained.
“What kind of lousy club can’t even manage the music timing?” Chris said coolly as he stood.
“Blaming the music for your own ‘performance issues‘? And wasn’t he the one who insisted on drinking here in the first place?” Dominic scoffed at Chris’s retreating back.
In the restroom, Wendy held Winter upright as she leaned over the sink.
Winter braced both hands against the counter. She felt nauseous, but nothing came up. The discomfort made her frown.

She glanced at Wendy’s reflection in the mirror and took a slow breath. “Thanks,” she said with crooked half–smile.
Chris Xander.
The man standing in front of her, calmly claiming to be Winter’s husband, was Chris Xander.
Shock flickered across Wendy’s face as she watched him carry Winter away.

In the parking lot, the driver hurried to open the back door.
Chris slid into the car with Winter still in his arms.
Half her body was wrapped against him. She blinked slowly and forced her eyes open, dazed but not completely gone.
The familiar scent of cedarwood mixed with a trace of tobacco filled her lungs. Her nose stung faintly.

She let out a soft breath.
“Chris,” she murmured, her voice thick with sleep and alcohol. “Did you come to divorce me?”
