Chapter 62
“Now get out of here! Both of you!”
Winter turned around and pulled William back into the apartment lobby.
At a signal from William, the bodyguards around them moved instantly and blocked the entrance. No matter how capable Chris’s people were, they were not getting in.
Inside the elevator, William stood with his back to her. Winter had too much pride to cry in front of people.
He quietly held out a hand. “I didn’t bring tissues.”
He rolled up the sleeve of his coat, exposing the sweater beneath, then held the soft fabric toward her.
He knew the ride up ten floors was long enough for her to fall apart completely.
Winter didn’t take the offer. After a long silence, she reached up and wiped her face with the back of her
hand. “I’m fine,” she said calmly.
When they got back, Winter shut herself in her room. William sat on the couch in the living room.
Soon, the doorbell rang. William went to open it. It was his assistant, holding a bag from the pharmacy.
“Ms. Scott called and told me to buy these. She said I needed to dress your wounds.”
William held the door handle and glanced back at the closed bedroom door. “Where’s Chris?”
“He left,” the assistant replied.
William let out a cold laugh.
The assistant stepped inside. “You need to treat the injuries on your face immediately. If you go back to set tomorrow like this, I won’t be able to explain it.”
William thought about Winter’s condition. How could he possibly feel at ease going back to set?
After applying the medicine, the assistant left.
William sat on the couch with his eyes closed. He didn’t sleep all night.
At dawn, he heard the bedroom door open. He immediately stood up and walked over. He lowered his head to study Winter’s face. She had put on light makeup, so it was hard to tell.
But William knew her too well. The more she put on makeup at times like this, the more she was trying to hide how she really looked.
The last time she had eaten one was with Chris.
A trace of bitterness rose in her chest. She swallowed the half–chewed bite quickly, forcing the emotion
down with it.
She cleared her throat and spoke as if nothing was wrong. “William, you should go back to set. Don’t worry. I won’t let myself get hurt again.”
The thin morning fog slowly lifted.
Winter drove out of the complex, heading toward the TV station. At a corner just outside the gates, a parked car slowly rolled up its window. A thin trail of smoke drifted from the narrowing gap.
On the passenger seat, a phone rang incessantly.
Chris glanced at the caller ID with bloodshot eyes and answered.
On the other end, Zac’s voice was stern. “Where are you? Skyla says you took a hit to the back and you’re refusing treatment. Get to the hospital now.”
