Game Over, Mr. CEO: Your Wife Is Done (Winter and Chris) novel Chapter 74

“That’s right.”

Chris’s gaze followed the movement of the knife. He shifted his stance ever so slightly, and in that gap, Winter caught sight of Zion lurking behind the group.

It was a silent signal, almost as if he were trying to steady her nerves.

William had mentioned once that Zion was a world–class marksman.

Suddenly, Winter understood Chris’s intent. He was trying to bait the man, drawing his focus away just long enough for Zion to find his mark or perhaps to take a kill shot.

But the man was hyper–vigilant. Even though his resolve was wavering, his grip never slackened. He left no clear opening.

With Winter held so close, even a marksman of Zion’s caliber faced a nearly impossible task without a proper vantage point. At this distance, the slightest tremor or a fraction of an inch could mean a bullet in her instead of him.

Chris wanted to swap himself for her. He was offering himself up as the hostage.

Winter clenched her teeth.

“So it was you who killed Jacob,” she suddenly shouted. “Chris, at least you finally had the guts to admit it! I knew this was your ego talking. You didn’t kill him to avenge me. You don’t even love me. Why pretend you care whether I live or die?

“Go back to your precious Skyla!”

Chris’s dark eyes locked onto her. “Winter, stop this nonsense!”

“Nonsense?” she cried. “You flaunted Skyla all over town, treating your legal wife like dirt, making me a laughingstock! I’m telling you, Chris, don’t think for a second that killing Jacob makes me yours again. You’re delusional!”

She raged and cried, deliberately loud and chaotic.

“Shut the hell up!” the man roared.

“This has nothing to do with you!” Winter shot back, pushing harder.

Chris’s expression turned deathly grim. “Winter!”

But she ignored him entirely. She was playing the part, pushing the man toward a blind rage, hoping he would slip up.

“If you have the guts, kill me now!” she screamed. “I don’t even want to live anymore. My husband cheats on me openly. I live like a fool. Maybe I would be better off dead!”

“I said shut up! You think I won’t actually kill you?”

A gunshot split the air.

The backpack lay open. The cake and liquor bottle had been taken out earlier.

Inside were a neatly folded men’s suit and a white lace–trimmed dress that looked disturbingly like a

wedding gown.

A horrifying realization struck her.

He had come here to die.

He had never planned to let her leave.

He had brought her here so she would die with him.
