Skyla’s hand was locked tight in Chris’s. She paused, her eyes soft, then slowly curled her fingers around his in return.
“Chris…”
After Chris had his medicine applied in the middle of the night, his fever still wouldn’t break. Later, his mind went hazy, and he lay in bed for hours without waking, no matter how loudly anyone called him.
Gavin and Dominic took turns trying to cool him down with physical methods, but it barely helped.
By dawn, Dominic stepped into the suite to rest for a bit, and Gavin went to the bathroom to change the
water.
At that point, Chris was finally sweating a little. It was a sign his fever was starting to go down, but he still hadn’t woken up.
Skyla pulled the cloth away with her free hand. Sitting in her wheelchair, she leaned forward and gently used it to wipe the sweat off his forehead.
The moment the cloth touched his skin, a voice rasped out.
“I won’t agree.”
Skyla froze.
But Chris still wasn’t awake. His pale lips pressed into a hard line. His sharp features were tense, and more and more sweat beaded on his forehead, like he was trapped in a nightmare he could not escape.
Won’t agree…
Won’t agree to what?
This couldn’t go on. She had to wake him up.
Skyla called urgently, “Chris, Chris!”
Chris’s expression darkened further.
All at once, his eyes snapped open. His dark gaze locked onto the person in front of him, intense enough to steal the air from her lungs.
“Chris…” Skyla let the handkerchief fall and gripped his hand with both of hers. His palm was damp with cold sweat. “You scared me. Did you have a nightmare?”
His throat bobbed. His vision seemed unfocused for a second before it finally cleared.
He closed his eyes, pulled his hand out of hers, and draped it over his forehead as he took a rough breath.

“Ms. Jasper, I’ll take very good care of Mr. Xander,” Gavin said evenly, all business.
“Mr. Xander, your wife is here.”
The room went quiet in an instant.
The “wife” the bodyguard meant could only be Winter.
Skyla frowned. She picked up the bowl of broth she had just poured. It was piping hot, hot enough to burn her even through the bowl, but she didn’t seem to feel it.
Instead, she turned her head toward the bed and searched Chris’s face.
Before Chris could say a word, a slim figure in a hospital gown stepped through the doorway.
Her hair was pulled into a low ponytail. Her complexion looked much better than before, but her eyes still betrayed weakness.
It softened her usually radiant face into a fragile kind of beauty, evoking tenderness and a sense of
distance.
