Chapter 90

After Winter recovered from hypothermia, her fever kept coming back. That day, she had barely been out of Chris’s hospital room for less than an hour when the fever spiked again.
The next day, it was still there, low–grade but stubborn.
William was freaking out so much he almost hired someone to come do a cleansing ritual in Chris’s hospital room, convinced Winter had brought back something unlucky.
Winter found his pacing and worrying more dizzying than the fever, so she finally sent him back to the Zeller estate to check on his grandfather.
After William left, she closed her eyes and drifted off. Half–asleep, she felt a warm hand press against
her forehead.
Winter broke into a cold sweat. She jolted awake, and it took her a moment to recognize the elegant, sophisticated woman standing before her.
Winter let out a shaky breath of relief. “Aunt Sasha, what are you doing here?”
Sasha Jenkins pressed a hand to Winter’s shoulder to keep her from sitting up, then tucked the blanket around her a little tighter. “I heard something happened to you, so I had Steve bring me to see you. How are you feeling now?”
“Much better,” Winter said. “Thank you, Aunt Sasha.”
Winter insisted on sitting up anyway. She had been trapped in a nightmare, and the sudden touch had rattled her. Still, she knew there were bodyguards stationed both inside and outside the room. No one
with ill intent could have slipped in.
Sasha was Steve’s mother. A few years ago, no one knew exactly what happened, but she and Steve’s father had a huge fight. They lived separately now, though they weren’t divorced.
Winter had entered the Xander household at seven. Sasha had always been kind to her. Winter also knew
Sasha, like Professor Freeman, had been an old classmate of her mother’s.
Even though Sasha didn’t live with the family anymore, she still cared about Winter. When Winter was pregnant last year, Sasha sent her plenty of supplements and called every few days to check on her health.
Sasha cupped Winter’s cheek, her expression full of concern. “You’ve lost weight. When you get discharged, come stay with me for a while. I’ll make sure you get your strength back.”
Winter opened her mouth to answer, but a clear, lazy voice cut in.
“Mom, she has Chris,” the voice said. “Why are we worrying about her?”
Steve was lounging on the sofa, peeling an apple.
“I know you want to divorce Chris. Winnie, I’ll be waiting for the day you finally turn around and run straight into my arms.”
Winter wanted to call him insane to his face.
But as soon as he finished, Steve straightened up. The teasing look vanished like it had never been there. He gave a faint smirk, then turned and followed Sasha out of the room.
In the elevator, Steve pressed the button for the first floor.
“I set up a blind date for you,” Sasha said, her chin tilted high with elegant authority. “You’re meeting her
tomorrow.”
Steve’s expression didn’t flicker. “I’m not going.”
Sasha looked up at him and let out a small laugh. “Are you still in love with Winter?”
Steve’s voice stayed lazy. “She was raised to be mine. She’s always supposed to be mine.”
