Steve walked up beside her. “Winnie, don’t forget you’re my date tonight. Running over here to talk to other men is going to make me jealous.”

As he spoke, he held out his right hand.

Winter rested her hand on his and followed him toward the entrance. As they walked, she clicked her tongue. “If you’re just a stand–in, you should know your place.”

“You say that and you’re not worried I’ll get my feelings hurt?” Steve didn’t seem bothered at all. “And you’re bringing me to a charity gala in front of everyone. Aren’t you worried about embarrassing Chris?”

Winter looked at him like she had just heard the funniest thing in the world. “So he can do whatever he wants, but I can’t?”

She lifted her chin. “Besides, you’re my brother–in–law. We’re family. What gossip could outsiders possibly have?”

Victor’s gaze settled on her. “Winter Scott?”

Winter nodded and stepped aside. “After you, Mr. Jasper.”

Victor walked past her. His eyes lingered on her for a brief moment, then he looked away and strode off.

Winter sat down on a sofa and pulled her interview outline from her clutch. It was folded neatly. She skimmed through it fast, making sure there were no mistakes. She wasn’t going to give Chris a single chance to nitpick.

She was still reviewing the questions when a sharp pop sounded.

In the next instant, the entire ballroom went dark.

Winter hurriedly folded the pages and shoved them back into her clutch. Then she stood and reached for her phone to turn on the flashlight.

But in the darkness, someone bumped into her. Her phone slipped from her hand and hit the floor.

A cool hand slid around her bare shoulder. Winter’s foot caught, and she stumbled straight into a hard
