Chapter 252

Zora’s POV

The coverage had been running for four days.

I had watched it the way I watched most things that were connected to decisions i had made….. The headlines, the analyst commentary, the public sentiment assembling itself from the image of Alex walking out of his own building with cameras following him.

It should have felt like something.

I had imagined, in the weeks of preparation, that it would feel like something.

What it felt like was this: nothing in the coverage had changed anything that mattered.

Maya had not wavered

This was the part I had not fully accounted for.

The plan had been built on the understanding that doubt was enough…. that the wondering was worse than believing, that a relationship could be destabilised by the specific, incremental pressure of the right information at the right moment delivered through the right channels.

Maya is not shaken or fliched…

She had stood beside him through the board meeting. Through the temporary leave.

She had stood beside him standing tall….

The plan had underestimated what Maya standing beside someone looked like.

I drove to Mason’s office without calling ahead.

The same impulse that had brought me through his door months ago, when the patience had run out and the vague answers had accumulated into something I could no longer manage.

The difference was what I knew now.

What I had watched.

What I had been part of…..

He looked up from his desk when I came through the door

The expression he wore when he had been expecting someone but had not known when they would arrive….

“Zara,” he said.

I sat.

Did not take off my coat.

“They’re still standing together,” I said

He looked at me.

“I thought this would break them,” I said.

He set down the file he had been reviewing.

was never supposed to,” he said.

I looked at him….

“This was only the beginning,” he said. “The allegation, the leave, the public coverage…. these are not the mechanism. These are the pressure. Pressure creates the conditions. It doesn’t produce the outcome by itself.

“Then what produces the outcome?” I said.

He looked at the desk….

“Time,” he said. “And the next step.”

“What if someone talks?” I said

The words arrived before I had fully decided to say them.

Not from impulse…

Mason looked at me.

The flat eyes.

The expression that did not change regardless of what the content of the conversation was.

“Then they’ll discover exactly how dangerous loose ends can be,” he said.

I held his gaze.

“Loose ends,” I said.

“Yes,” he said.

He picked up the file again.

The gesture of someone returning to what they had been doing before the interruption…. the deliberate communication that the conversation had produced what it needed to produce and was now complete.

I looked at the file.

At his hands on it.

At the face above it, which was already engaged with something else.

I stood.

Picked up my bag.

Moved toward the door.

His voice.

“Zara.”

I turned.

He was looking at me.

Not with warmth.

ray to the course,” he said.

Three words.

In the register of something that was simultaneously an instruction and a warning, that communicated the distinction between someone who was an asset and someone who had become something else, that existed in the specific category of things said in professional environments between people who understood that the saying of

them was not casual.

“Of course,” I said.

I walked out.

The corridor.

The elevator.

The lobby.

Outside…. the cold of the street

I stood on the pavement.

Looked up at the building.

At the floor where Mason’s office was.

At the window that was his from the outside.

He had said: exactly how dangerous loose ends can be.

He had said it to me.

Not as information. As a statement of fact.

As orientation.

So I understood where I stood in the arrangement.

So I understood what happened to people who became loose ends.

I was already a loose end.

MASON’S POV

The second phone had been ringing more frequently.

Not the one I used for business… the one that existed in the locked drawer alongside the folder, that had one contact in it, that I answered without letting it ring twice because the person on the other end had communicated, without stating it directly, that letting it ring twice was a statement.

I answered…

The call from Brenda

I had been reviewing the folder….

the folder was the full picture

Not what anyone else had.

What I had assembled across the months while other people were assembling their versions.

Her voice when she answered was the first tell.

Not what she said….

Less confident.

Not dramatically

“The pressure is getting worse,” she said.

I waited.

“People keep asking questions,” she said. “I don’t know how much longer I can handle this.”

I leaned back.

“You don’t have to worry,” I said. “Everything is proceeding exactly as planned”

The words arrived in the register I had developed for this….. not dismissive, not the cold version that communicated the caller’s concern was irrelevant. The measured version. The one that communicated confidence

rather than indifference.

She said something else.
