Chapter 282
Alex’s POV
I had noticed the vehicle three times before I mentioned it to anyone.
Better to watch.
Berter to let them believe they remained unseen.
The same black sedan.
Parked at slightly varying positions across the street from Voss Maritime’s main entrance…. never in exactly the same spot
twice…
I had caught it the first time by accident.
The second time deliberately, checking a location I had already begun suspecting.
The third time confirmed what the first two had suggested…
I didnot order my security team to approach the vehicle.
Instead, I gave a different instruction.
“Track it,” I told the security director. “Discreetly. I want to know who owns it, who’s driving it, and how long it’s been positioned here before I noticed.”
She nodded.
Left to assemble the team.
The report came back the following afternoon.
I had been expecting a name.
Mason’s name, specifically…. the assumption I had carried since the moment I confirmed the sedan’s presence, the, natural conclusion that surveillance appearing outside my company, during a period when Mason was actively evading a nationwide arrest warrant, would connect to him in some capacity..
The registration did not connect to Mason.
Not to any entity I recognised from the extensive documentation Fielding had assembled across the past months… not the shells, not the network of dissolved corporate structures, not any of the layered architecture that had characterised Mason’s operations.
I looked at the security director.
“Then who owns it?” I said.
She handed me another file.
Thicker than I expected for a simple vehicle registration inquiry.
“The vehicle is registered to a private investment firm,” she said. “Corporate ownership, not individual. The firm itself has almost no public presence…. no marketing materials, no website beyond a minimal compliance filing, no documented client relationships that we’ve been able to trace.”
I opened the file.
The company name was on the first page.

I looked at it.
I had seen this name.
Not in Mason’s documentation.
In Maya’s.
The account structures her father had been tracking in the notebook. The corporate entities connected to Hargrove Meridian’s ownership dispute.
The same firm.
Here.
Positioned outside my company.
Watching.
I closed the file.
Sat with it for a moment.
Looked toward the window…. the ordinary view of the city that had witnessed every significant realisation of the past year, that continued its indifferent existence regardless of what I was understanding inside this office.
Someone was not simply watching Maya anymore.
They were watching me.
This was not Mason.
Mason was running…. hiding in apartments that shifted every few days, evading a warrant, his own resources reportedly iwindling as the investigation closed in on the infrastructure he had built for himself.
Mason did not have the resources to maintain layered corporate structures with almost no public footprint, to deploy surveillance vehicles registered through opaque investment firms, to operate with the kind of patient, well–funded discretion this represented.
This was someone above Mason.
The same someone who had been running the corporate takeover attempt before Mason’s personal operation had even begun.
I picked up my phone.
Called Maya.
She answered on the second ring…
“We need to be careful,” I said.
“What happened?” she said.
“There’s been surveillance outside Voss Maritime,” I said. “A vehicle, positioned near the entrance, moved regularly enough to avoid an obvious pattern. My security team traced the registration.” I looked at the tile again. “It’s not Mason. It’s a private investment firm… one that connects to the account structures your father was tracking. The same network Zara identified in Mason’s older payments.”
Maya was quiet.
