Chapter 12

(Daisy’s POV)

The ride was too quiet.

Not peaceful quiet. Not “everyone is tired and reflecting on life” quiet. This was the kind of silence that felt… intentional. Like everyone in the car knew something I didn’t, and they had all collectively agreed not to share. Which honestly felt/rude.

I shifted slightly in my seat and glanced sideways at DeLuca. He hadn’t said a word since we left the mansion.

Not one.

Meanwhile, I had been sitting here for- what?, thirty minutes? Forty? Long enough for my thoughts to start eating themselves.

“So,” I said finally, because I physically could not take it anymore. “Are we just… not talking today, or is this part of the mysterious

kidnapping package?”

There was no response for several seconds. Fantastic.

I nodded to myself. “Love that. Very interactive.”

My gaze dropped briefly to my empty hands, and just like that, the irritation came rushing back.

My phone!

“You broke my phone.” I muttered and turned fully toward him now.

“You didn’t just take it. You didn’t just confiscate it like a normal controlling person. You crushed it. Like it personally offended you!”

Still silence. He was ignoring me.

I frowned harder.

“Do you know how long I saved for that phone?” I continued, my voice tightening despite myself. “I skipped lunches. Actual meals- voluntarily! And I love food!” I voiced.

Still nothing.

I let out a short, incredulous laugh. “That was an investment, Deluca. A financial commitment.” I added and grew tired.

I leaned back in my seat, crossing my arms.

“Also,” I added, “people are probably looking for me now.”

That one slipped out quieter.

I stared ahead, watching the road blur past through the tinted window.

“My roommate thinks I ran away,” I muttered. “My job probably thinks I quit. And my mom-”

I stopped.

Pressed my lips together. Then shook my head slightly like I could physically shove the thought away.

“Anyway,” I muttered, forcing my tone back up.

I sighed and turned my attention to the window, trying to ignore the fact that there were at least four black SUVS moving with us like we were some kind of extremely aggressive parade.
