Chapter 142
“Daisy.”
I paused.
Not because I wanted to.
Because unfortunately my nervous system still reacted to his voice like had signed a contract behind my back.
I turned slightly.
And DeLuca was watching me now with that same unreadable expression he always wore whenever he was probably thinking too much and saying too little.
Then finally he spoke.
“Thank you.”
The words caught me off guard enough to make me blink.
“…for what?”
“For being honest the other day.”
I grew more confused while his gaze held mine steadily.
“When you said this was only a contract.”
The rest of the room disappeared for a moment. Just completely vanished.
Because suddenly all I could hear was my own heartbeat.
Slow and painful.
He had read everything.
Everything.
And still chose to say this.
I swallowed hard.
“Oh.”
That was all that came out.
Just one stupid little sound, and then something flickered across his face then.
Not satisfaction. Just something quieter.
Your-were-right” he continued evenly. “This arrangement was always pointless.”
Every word felt like pressure against my chest now.
I nodded once slowly because I didnt want anymore of this.
“Right,” I whispered and the air between us grew unbearably still again.
Then the front door suddenly opened.
Lillian stepped inside carrying shopping bags before stopping slightly at the atmosphere in the room?
Her gaze moved between both of us quickly.
“Oh,” she said carefully. “Bad timing?”
Neither of us answered… Which honestly answered enough.
Lillian slowly placed the bags down.
“I’ll just… disappear.”
I almost laughed at that. Painfully laughed.
DeLuca looked away first, running a hand through his hair before reaching for his keys again.
With that, he walked past me. Not touching me and not even looking at me again.
Just walking away toward his room.
His door shut quietly seconds later.
