Chapter 157
He remained silent.
‘Imagine I walked into one of your conversations with Mabel.”
His gaze twitched immediately. Interesting. I continued. “And then I started telling you she wasn’t good for you and would ruin your life.”
His gaze remained locked on mine.
“And I did all this publicly.” I stepped closer. ‘How would that feel?”
Silence.
*Before you answer, let me clarify something. I’m not saying Mabel would do any of those things.” I pointed toward him. “I m making a point.” Then toward myself “Because I’m trying to explain basic courtesy.”
His expression remained unreadable. Then he said, “So his name is Archer.”
I stared. Actually stared as confusion attacked me. “Are you listening to a single thing I’m saying?”
Nothing.
My voice rose. “Seriously, are you listening? Because at this point I’m convinced you intentionally do this.”
He remained infuriatingly calm and in reactive so that I threw my hands up now. You know what? Forget it.” I laughed again. This one sounded worse.
‘I just realized something.” His gaze followed me. “You don’t care! It hurts to admit it but it’s the truth!”
The words landed hard. The room went quiet.
Then, unexpectedly, he spoke. ‘So you think you’re the only one that’s hurt?”
Everything inside me halted. I blinked once. “What?”
He didn’t answer so that my heart started beating weirdly.
“You’re hurt?’ I was surprised.
He didn’t respond so that stared at him. Actually looked at him. And for the first time all evening, something seemed different on his face.
I swallowed. ‘Fine.” My voice came out softer. “I get it. His gaze remained on mine. It’s because of the things I said.” I said and once again, felt bad. You know why?
Because I have a heart unlike some people.
