Chapter 17
(Daisy’s POV)
The room hadn’t changed.
Same dim light. Same cold wall pressed against my back. Same tray of food sitting a few feet away like it had personally offended
But now there was something new.
A sentence.
It kept replaying in my head like my brain had decided this was the only thing worth focusing on.
“Roman Volkov will be arriving to see you soon.”
Soon.
That was a very flexible word.
Soon could mean five minutes. Soon could mean tomorrow.
Soon could mean… never, apparently, but I didn’t know that yet.
I shifted slightly against the chain, the metal scraping faintly as I moved.
Okay.
So.
This was happening.
I stared ahead.
What was this supposed to be?
A reunion?
No. That felt like a very generous word for a situation that involved chains and poor lighting.
A confrontation?
That seemed more likely.
Or just… a meeting?
Which, again, felt like false advertising given the circumstances.
I exhaled slowly.
What do people even do in situations like this?
Like, hypothetically; if your long-lost father, who may or may not be a dangerous crime lord, decides to show up after twenty-one years of radio silence… what’s the correct reaction?
Do you hug him?
That feels wrong.
Do you yell?
That feels… justified.
Do you pretend you don’t care?
That one felt doable.
I tilted my head slightly, staring at nothing.
