Chapter 195
A pause followed.
Then another.
His eyes narrowed slightly.
“How many?”
More silence.
I watched him carefully.
Whatever information he was receiving, he clearly didn’t like it.
Eventually, he spoke again.
“Start from the beginning.”
The conversation continued for another minute before he finally ended the call.
The silence that followed seemed heavier than before.
I waited.
DeLuca looked at the phone.
Then at the road ahead.
Then back at me.
“What happened?” I asked.
“The authorities eventually responded to the hospital attack.”
My stomach tightened.
“What happened?”
“One of the shooters was killed during the confrontation.”
I swallowed.
“The others escaped.”
The words settled between us.
“And?”
DeLuca’s gaze shifted briefly toward the photograph still displayed on the phone in my hands.
