With the gun aimed at him, Nico’s whole body locked, panic flooding his face, shaking hard enough that I
could see it from where I stood.
“Relax,” DeLuca said, almost gently. “I’m not killing you. I’m not the kind of friend you were.”
Two shots rang out in quick succession after that, and Nico collapsed, screaming, both hands clutching his
knees, rolling on the ground in agony while blood spread fast beneath him.
“I’ve made you disabled,” DeLuca said. “Now you have all the time in the world to sit with what you did and
feel proud of it.” He turned to one of the men. “Take him to the car. We’ll get him to a hospital after—
they’ll need to amputate. I made sure of that.”
Nico was dragged away, still screaming, and then it was Lillian’s turn under DeLuca’s attention. She was
already shaking, and it only intensified once his gaze actually landed on her.
“Please,” she said. “Please.” Her eyes found mine. “Daisy, please. It’s me. Lillian. I was misled, I was deceived,
but it’s still me. Please don’t let them hurt me.”
Tears streamed freely down her face, and beside me, Mabel muttered, “Oh my goodness, this is insane. Are
we in a movie right now?”
I barely heard her. My focus stayed locked on Lillian, and something in me split cleanly down the middle,
refusing to pick a side no matter how hard I tried to force it. The woman who’d joined a war against
everyone I loved. The person who used to know exactly how I took my coffee and never once got it wrong.
Both of those were true at the same time, and I hated that neither one canceled the other out.
“It’s not up to Daisy whether you’re pardoned,” DeLuca said, and I turned to him, Lillian doing the same,
along with everyone else in earshot.
“Daisy would always choose forgiveness,” he continued. “Her heart doesn’t have room for contempt, for hate.
That’s exactly why I can’t let her be the one who decides. His eyes met mine for a moment, something soft
passing through them despite everything, before he turned back to Lillian. “So I decide how this ends for
you.” He crouched in front of her. “And I’m about to. But if you want to buy yourself time, tell me Nico’s

plan with my father. Whatever they built together.”
“But-”

“I won’t tolerate lies,” he cut in, “or excuses. Say the wrong thing and I put a bullet in your head, because I am trying very hard not to. I’m trying to give Daisy one less person like you in her life. So if you know
what’s good for you, speak. And speak honestly.”
Lillian trembled through several breaths before finally managing words.
“I don’t know the actual plan. I swear it. I wasn’t in the room when they discussed it- Nico was supposed to brief me after this attack finished. All I know is where Mr. Salvatore is.”
“Where.”
She hesitated, and DeLuca shifted closer, which was enough.
“Fairhaven Regional,” she said. “Small private airport off Route 9. Somewhere around 4400 Skyline Drive.”
DeLuca studied her for a long moment before rising to his feet. “Take her away.”
Men closed in and pulled her up, dragging her off while she begged, over and over, “Please, please forgive me, Daisy. Please…”
I just stood there and watched her go.
Tessa appeared at my side. “Are you okay?”
I nodded automatically, understanding why she’d asked- she knew what Lillian used to mean to me. But whatever size Tessa imagined this problem to be, she was working with the wrong unit of measurement entirely. This wasn’t a bruise. This was a whole limb.
DeLuca appeared in front of me and my mother a moment later.
“Go rest,” he said. “All of you. Find somewhere and just rest.”

I couldn’t argue with that even if I’d wanted to, my mind too crowded, too full of everything that had just
happened, the ache and confusion of it pressing against the inside of my skull. I started to move, then
stopped.
“What about you?”
He gestured behind him without a word, and I understood immediately, the way you understand things you’d rather not. Nico’s men. All of them. DeLuca was going to end it, and this piece wasn’t going to be simple for him the way the rest of tonight had been, not because of the numbers involved but because he’d known some of these men, grown up around them, once, before any of this had turned into what it was now.
I read it plainly on his face.
I let out a slow breath, squeezed his arm gently, and made myself walk away. As I moved back toward the building, I heard guns being readied behind me, men’s voices rising in fear, pleading, mixed with the low, efficient bark of others falling into position to finish it.
