Chapter 51
Different words. Same energy. It followed me like a piercing shadow, but I didn’t stop.
I couldn’t.
Because running meant losing, and I had already lost enough. So I walked faster instead, eyes forward, ignoring the heat crawling up my neck, the weight pressing against my chest.
Just get to class.
That was the goal. Nothing else mattered.
I finally reached the hallway and pushed through the doors, exhaling slightly. Less people.
Better.
I moved quickly, scanning for the classroom I needed, my head still buzzing, my thoughts barely staying in one place long enough
to be useful.
I found the door then, pushed it open, stepped inside, and immediately shut it behind me, pressing my back against it.
“Okay,” I breathed out. “That was survivable. I’m alive. They can’t kill me. I’ll overcome this like coke eventually overcomes mentos. Yeah.” I said this and silence responded as expected… but then it was too much silence.
I frowned slightly and looked up. And froze.
Because the room was not empty. Not even close.
There were over a dozen students, a lecturer and a presentation paused mid-slide……all of them staring at me.
Oh no.
I panicked, but then I knew I had to do something.
“Well,” I said kindly, swallowing, “this is not my class.”
No one responded.
Understandable.
I nodded awkwardly, already searching for the door handle without looking.
“Okay. I’m going to leave now.”
Thankfully, I found the handle, else I would have died there. So now, I opened the door, slipped out, and closed it carefully this time. Then stood there in the hallway, staring straight ahead.
“…I need to relocate,” I whispered.
But not today.
Today I had tests.
So eventually, I found the actual classroom, checked the label twice like my life depended on it, and stepped inside.
This time, correctly.
The lecturer looked up as I entered, eyes briefly scanning my face, then my general state of existence.
I was sweating. Profusely.
“I can explain,” I started quickly.
He raised a hand that stopped me.
“Sit down.”
I/sat.
Explanation denied.
Honestly, probably for the best.
I pulled out my pen, my hands still slightly shaky, and placed my phone on the desk, glancing at it one more time.
Still no response from DeLuca.
I put it away as the test papers were handed out.
I looked at mine, read the first question, and immediately knew.
I might be screwed.
Two hours later, I stumbled out of the building like I had just survived something illegal.
Two tests.
Back to back.
