Chapter 6
(Daisy’s POV)
I landed on the ground with all the grace of a falling refrigerator.
My knees ached but for one glorious, beautiful second, I thought I had done it.
I had escaped.
I was standing on solid ground. The night air felt cold against my face, while the massive mansion behind me looked slightly less terrifying now that I wasn’t dangling off its walls like a confused raccoon.
“Ha,” I whispered triumphantly to absolutely no one. Then a flashlight beam hit my face.
“Oh no.”
Another light snapped on and Men appeared from the shadows like very large, very muscular mushrooms.
I considered my options.
Running.
Screaming for help.
Pretending I was a decorative garden statue.
I chose running.
I bolted toward what looked like a small archway near the edge of the courtyard, my shoes slapping loudly against the stone path.
Behind me, someone shouted.
“Stop!”
I ran faster.
I was almost there. The archway was only a few feet away; freedom was practically waving at me-
A massive arm shot out from the darkness.
It grabbed me by the waist and lifted me completely off the ground.
“Shoot.”
By the time they dragged me back inside the house, I had fully accepted that my athletic career was over before it ever’ began.
Two guards marched me into a large living room where DeLuca was waiting.
Of course.
He sat in a chair like some kind of terrifying billionaire king, long legs stretched slightly forward, hands resting loosely together. Guards stood along the walls, complementing the scene.
DeLuca wasn’t smiling.
Just then, one of the men holding my arm- Fritzo, I think, spoke first.
“This one’s strange, boss,” he said.
I turned my head.
“Excuse me?”
Fritzo shrugged slightly. “Most people look scared of people like us and panic for the consequences of disobedience.”
I glanced around the room thoughtfully.
“Well,” I said, “your guys are definitely muscular.”
