Chapter 69
Meanwhile, the ride itself was smooth. No rattling, no struggle, no near-death experience like my bike on a bad day. Or any day.
It was just seamless, which should have been nice. And it was… until we got to school.
As the car rolled into the school, I didn’t need to guess what was about to happen.
I had seen it yesterday.
The slowing steps…
The turning heads…
The way attention gathers before it fully lands.
I exhaled slowly. “Okay,” I muttered. “We’re doing this again.”
The car stopped and DeLuca stepped out, unrushed but still the first to step out… and just like that, the shift happened.
People moved toward him like they had rehearsed it for which Lilian got out and joined in the choreography
Voices. Phones. That same pull.
I stepped out after them, and this time, I didn’t wait for it to hit me. I already knew where I stood in this.
I was invisible, which was a good thing in every aspect. And so I happily disappeared.
The day passed… strangely.
Classes came and went. I kept my head down, moved carefully, avoided unnecessary attention.
The “crack-me/kiss cam girl” thing was still there, but softer now, as there were occasional whispers and a glance here and there.
But nothing like before.
It was all manageable- until I saw her.
Mabel.
She didn’t even need to call my name. Her fast eyes alone were enough.
They locked on me, she paused, then smiled while my heart staggered.
Not again
I tried…
She frowned slightly. “I don’t think I got that.”
