Chapter 86
(Daisy’s POV)
The worst part about being seen isn’t the moment itself.
It’s everything that follows.
The knowing.
The waiting.
I I didn’t give DeLuca the chance to say anything. He had clearly witnessed the instance, and the second after our eyes met, I turned
and walked away.
I walked like I had somewhere to be that when I knew I would still end up heading to his car. In fact, I found myself heading there now since today was my day off at the café.
I made it to the parking lot and reached the car, already pulling the handle to get in. I didn’t know what my plan was but I just wanted to get in and get home.
The door didn’t open. It was locked. Of course.
Naturally, it was supposed to be locked. So I had to wait for him.
I stood there for a second and my arms crossed on instinct, like I could hold myself together if I just applied enough pressure.
Behind me, voices carried. I didn’t turn fully, but I could see him from the corner of my eye on my left. DeLuca was speaking to someone- some guy I didn’t recognize, and for a moment, I focused on that instead.
But the conversation ended quickly as DeLuca dismissed the guy with a brief nod and started walking toward me. I straightened slightly, resetting my expression into something neutral enough to pass.
He got close and unlocked the car. I didn’t wait.
I got in immediately, pulling the door shut like it was a boundary I could control. My arms folded again, tighter this time, and I fixed my gaze forward.
If he asked anything, I would think of another excuse. He had definitely seen my blissful interaction with Nathan and his boys so he would normally want to inquire, especially since we had just discussed the prank video some hours ago.
He didn’t ask any.
The engine started instead and the car moved. And that was it.
No questions.
Nothing.
At first, I thought maybe he was just waiting. That this was the calm before something very uncomfortable. But the drive stayed
quiet.
Not tense. Just quiet. And somehow, that felt worse, because now I didn’t know what he was thinking.
Or if he had already decided something. Or if he just didn’t care that was a probable option. It isn’t his business after all.
I leaned back slightly now, staring out the window, letting the movement of the road distract me from everything else I didn’t want
to sit with.
By the time we got to Maple Crest, I was more than ready to get out.
The car stopped. I opened the door immediately and stepped out, not waiting or looking back.
