He Gave Me Hearing, Then Taught Me What Silence Really Means novel Chapter 12

Even if that hope was as thin as a spider's web, as long as she carefully held onto it, she believed Nelson would eventually come back.

But the tattoo on his wrist was gone.

Nelson's pale, elegant wrist flexed so hard his veins starkly pushed against his skin.

His expression darkened, his lips pressing into a grim line. "You've been waiting years to say that, haven't you?"

Juniper hadn't expected him to ask that. Years?

Was it when he took his childhood sweetheart overseas, or right after Lydia flaunted her pregnancy test?

What right did he have to question her?

But right now, none of it mattered.

She lowered her head and walked toward the taxi that had pulled up behind his car.

Sitting in the driver's seat, Nelson slammed his hand against the horn repeatedly.

The blaring sound was sharp and impatient, a reckless release of his fury.

A second later, his car shot forward, disappearing into the heavy traffic like a falling star.

By the time Juniper got home, exhaustion had seeped into her bones. Having skipped dinner, she was starving.

She quickly threw together a simple plate of spaghetti and checked her phone to see a text from Macy.

[I saw Nelson today. He's still as insufferable as ever. Nothing is going on between you two, right?]

It was a thinly veiled attempt to find out if there was still a spark between them.

Macy gripped her phone tightly, her palms sweating with nerves.

The reply came quickly.

[What could possibly be going on? We ended a long time ago.]

Macy let out a heavy breath, a bright smile instantly lighting up her eyes.

She knew it. After hearing what she had said back then, there was no way Nelson could still be with Juniper.

He had too much pride for that.
