The moment the words left Stella's mouth, she distinctly felt Jarrod's eyes darken.

A split second later, his expression smoothed back into its usual stony mask.

He lightly tapped his finger against his knee, letting the silence stretch for several agonizing seconds before speaking in a voice totally devoid of emotion. "Is it because of Chloe, or do you feel you've been wronged by the Fuller family?"

Stella shook her head, looking him dead in the eye. "Neither. It's a 'me' problem. Besides, I'm not the perfect wife you think I am. You should find someone you genuinely love, someone who's a flawless match for you."

"That's none of your concern. You just need to answer one question: have you made your final decision?" Jarrod demanded.

Stella nodded. "Yes."

Jarrod stared at her for a long, heavy moment before letting out a low scoff. There was absolutely zero warmth in his laugh. "My patience is wearing thin, Stella. You better think long and hard before you answer me again."

"There are still over two weeks left in the cooling-off period. Once that's up, I won't give you another chance."

Without waiting for her to say another word, Jarrod snatched up his car keys and stormed out the door.

The moment the door clicked shut, Stella's rigid spine sagged, and she collapsed completely into the sofa.

She wouldn't regret her decision.

Leaning on Jarrod might secure her and the Quinn family a life of untouchable wealth and privilege, but you couldn't gamble your entire future on another person.

The risk was simply too high.

Right now, Jarrod thought she was convenient, so she enjoyed the perks of his favor. But what if one day he found someone better and decided to strip it all away? What was she supposed to do then? Discard her dignity and beg him to stay?

So, before anything disastrous happened, and before she was completely consumed by her feelings, pulling out was the absolute best option.

The next day was Saturday.

When Stella called Summer, Summer happily chirped that she had just been about to call her.
