No one noticed the momentary stiffness in York's posture.
Gillian tried to push herself up, but her limbs felt like jelly, completely drained of strength.
Valery gasped in horror and rushed forward to help, but Miles beat her to it.
He knelt down and gently supported her by the arm, using a perfectly gentlemanly grip to leverage her back to her feet. "Are you alright?"
"Thank you, I'm fine."
Gillian stood up on her own, her head spinning with a thick, heavy fog. Just standing upright took immense effort, and she swayed slightly on her feet.
She had taken two hard falls just now. Her body was already weak, and with a history of a previous termination, this current pregnancy was only at six weeks and highly unstable.
Not daring to blatantly protect her stomach in front of everyone, she could only tightly grip the hem of her shirt. Her heart twisted into a suffocating knot of pure terror. Would the baby be okay?
"What happened to your hand?" Valery’s sharp eyes immediately caught the bruising.
"It's nothing," Gillian offered a faint, incredibly weak smile.
York's expression turned viciously grim.
Miles could clearly see the fresh footprint bruising her skin, but he also understood that, with all their classmates and friends present, Gillian wouldn't want to cause a scene and embarrass anyone.
Just then, the venue staff rushed in, apologizing profusely. "We are so sorry for ruining your experience. The circuitry inspection showed no underlying faults."
The staff member walked over to the breaker panel located right behind the chair York had been sitting in and flipped the switch back up. "Someone might have accidentally bumped against the breaker in the dark, or it simply tripped. To make up for this, we're comping the room a free case of premium liquor. Please, enjoy yourselves!"
York was far too arrogant to pull a childish stunt like cutting the lights; it must have genuinely tripped.
Gillian felt too physically ill to stay a second longer. She forced out a polite goodbye, grabbed her purse, and left the party early.
Her slender figure looked incredibly small and isolated as she walked away. Because of the lingering chill and the physical toll of the falls, her steps were visibly unsteady.
Valery turned to Miles. "Miles, you drove here, right? She used to be close with you—do me a favor and make sure she gets home safely."

It was getting late. Aside from the karaoke lounge, the rest of the mall had already closed, making it nearly impossible to flag down a cab.
Gillian stood near the mall entrance as the torrential rain poured down, the aggressive wind whipping freezing drops against her pale face. The autumn storm brought a bone-deep, biting chill.
She felt as though her limbs were slowly freezing solid while she desperately waited for a ride-share driver to accept her request.
