I Loved You in the Dark Until Someone Loved Me in the Light novel Chapter 20

Just as Gillian opened her mouth to speak, Miles smoothly cut in with a smile, "Really? You think Gillian and I make a good match?"

It was delivered like a lighthearted joke, but it firmly established their dynamic.

Only another man could recognize the subtle challenge in those words—not denying it meant he was acknowledging it. He was interested in Gillian, and he wasn't afraid to show it.

York's gaze turned dangerously somber, practically radiating a localized blizzard, though his thoughts remained unreadable.

"Of course! The two of you are brilliant and gorgeous. The rumors from medical school are still going strong! You two are still the top-ranked fantasy couple on the campus forums! Good luck, Vice President Stanton! You have to win her over!"

Hailey was buzzing with excitement. "The forums are absolutely going to explode when they hear about this!"

Miles offered a warm, polite smile. His eyes settled on Gillian with an incredibly forgiving softness, leaving it ambiguous whether he was just playing along with the joke to save her from an awkward situation, or if he meant every word. "I'll certainly try my best."

Gillian hesitated under the weight of his gaze and was just about to speak.

York brutally cut her off.

He looked down at Hailey. "Aren't you hungry? The food has already been served, and it's going to get cold."

"Then we won't interrupt your date! Let's go eat, York!" Hailey instantly latched onto his arm.

"York, I swear I can feel the baby kicking," Hailey pouted playfully, tilting her head up to look at him with pure adoration.

"You..." York let out a helpless, completely doting sigh, his hand coming up to gently pat the back of her head. "It's only been two months. You can't feel anything yet..."

Gillian watched their retreating figures, her eyelashes fluttering downward to hide her eyes.

Her hands curled into tight fists. York hadn't spared her a single glance during the entire exchange. His entire world was centered on Hailey.

She remembered that today was the annual shareholder meeting for his company. York was a notorious workaholic who always prioritized business, yet here he was, skipping it just to accompany Hailey.

Miles studied Gillian's face, his eyes narrowing slightly. "Do you know Mr. Foster?"

Gillian took a slow sip of her warm water, her voice completely flat. "No."

She said the word, but Miles’s intuition told him their dynamic was nowhere near that simple.

By the time they finished lunch, a torrential downpour had started outside.

It had been raining on and off for the past two days. It hadn't been raining when she left the house, so Gillian hadn't brought an umbrella. However, Miles had somehow acquired one.

The man shrugged off his tailored jacket and draped it securely over her shoulders. Just as Gillian tried to decline, he spoke in a low, gentle voice.

"Keep it on. You didn't reject my help last night, so there's no reason to push me away today. It's just a jacket; it doesn't mean anything. You just recovered from a fever, and you absolutely cannot afford to catch another chill in this wind."

He was so polite, so completely graceful in his actions and words, that he left her absolutely no room to refuse.

She had no choice but to pull the jacket tighter around herself. "I'll get it dry-cleaned and return it to you, along with the one from yesterday."
