Chapter 31

Aurora’s POV

I woke up and immediately regretted moving

My lower back ached. My legs carried a lingering soreness that told me exactly how last night had gone. I rolled over, reached across the bed, and found cold sheets. Silas was already gone.

I sat up, pulled the blanket around my shoulders, and noticed a glass of water on the nightstand. Under it was a sticky note in his handwriting:

Breakfast is warming in the pot. Training started early today. Back tonight. Drink the milk before you leave for work.

I folded it carefully. Opened the drawer and tucked it inside on top of the foil ring I’d kept. Then I dragged myself into the shower.

Hot water on my back loosened some of the ache. I caught my reflection in the mirror – two faint red marks on the side of my neck, just below the collarbone. I touched them with two fingers, said nothing, and reached for a shirt with a slightly higher neckline.

Downstairs, the pot held fried eggs, toast, and a small plate of cut fruit. I ate slowly. Washed the dishes. Put my shoes on. Left.

I’d been at my desk less than an hour when my boss called both me and Emily into his office.

He sat behind his desk, slid a project folder across to us, and got straight to it.

“New assignment. We’ve been given exclusive access to interview an S class wolf beastman – Kane Westbrook.”

He tapped the folder. “He started in the Colosseum at the very bottom. Fought his way up, one match at a time, until he reached S-class. No beastman had ever done that before.”

My pulse ticked up.

“He’s running a beastman rights foundation now. Good public reputation We’ve got an exclusive interview slot.” He looked between us. “I’ve narrowed it down to you two. Who gets the project depends on Kane himself. He’ll come in for a face-to-face meeting the day after tomorrow. He picks the interviewer. You both prepare.”

He handed us a packet.

Emily took hers. I opened mine.

First page: a photo. Sharp jawline. Hard eyes. A pale scar cutting through his left brow. Below it:

Kane Westbrook. S-Class Wolf Beastman. Founder & Director, Beastman Rescue Foundation.

I closed the folder. Walked out. My heart was beating faster than usual.

I’d heard of Kane. Everyone in the industry had. Colosseum kid. Clawed his way out. Now he was pulling other beastmen out of the same pit. I’d always respected him from afar,

Now I had a shot at talking to him.

Emily caught up with me in the corridor.

She stepped in front of me, folder tucked under her arm, eyebrows raised.

m taking this project,” she said. “Save yourself the effort. Your S-class tiger probably keeps you busy enough.”

I didn’t stop walking. Just glanced at her sideways. “May the best person win.”

She scoffed and turned back toward her desk.

I sat down and opened Kane’s file again. Birth year. Colosseum registration number. Fight records. Foundation launch date. Page by page.

The deeper I read, the harder it got to breathe. Survival rate for lowest-tier beastmen in the colosseum was under thirty percent. Making it out alive was a miracle. Making it to S-class was unheard of.

At the bottom of the file was a short line about the foundation’s current operations: Fundraising for shelter expansion.

I circled it with a pen.

Mia leaned over from the next desk. “What’s that?”

“New project.”

She squinted at the cover photo. Her eyes widened. “That’s Kane Westbrook.” She lowered her voice. “I’ve heard things about him. Hard guy. Doesn’t do commercial interviews. Why’d he agree to this one?”

I shook my head. “Don’t know.” I closed the folder. “But the opportunity’s here. I’m not letting it slip.”

I got home that evening and spread Kane’s file across the coffee table. Sat on the carpet cross-legged, notebook open, pen in hand, drafting interview

was so deep in it I didn’t hear the lock turn.

A warm tiger tail dropped over the edge of the sofa and brushed the back of my hand.

I jumped. Looked up.

Silas was standing beside the couch, looking down at the spread of papers on the table. His eyes landed on Kane’s photo and stayed there.

His ears slowly flattened. His tail retracted.

“Who’s this?” he asked. Voice flat. Quiet.

Į

I blinked. Then I saw his face – the tight jaw, the lowered ears and almost laughed.

I set my pen down, reached for his hand, and pulled him toward me.

“Work. I’ve got a new assignment-interviewing a werewolf.”

He let me drag him down onto the carpet. Looked at the photo again. Ears still drooping.

“Oh.” Pause. “Got any ideas for the interview yet?”
