Chapter 35
My mother, standing beside her, turned her head. Her eyes landed on Silas.
She looked him up and down. Then her tone shifted. “You see, Silas. This is who she is. Petty. Cold.” She tilted her head, smiled. “You’re a beastman. You deserve better than her. Our Phoebe is so much more sensible — gentle, considerate. A thousand times better than Aurora’s icy personality.”
She pushed Phoebe forward a step. The smile widened. “Would you consider switching? If you’re willing, we can apply at the Matching Center for a transfer. Phoeb Purchase completed eat you poorly.”
Phoebe stumbled half a step forward, caught herself, and looked up at Silas. Her eyes carried some hopeful.
Silas looked down at her a second. Then he looked away.
“No thanks,” he said. “I have a habit. I don’t pick up other people’s trash.”
Phoebe’s face went completely white. My mother’s mouth twitched. Behind her, my father’s fists clenched.
My mother’s lips parted, then closed. It seemed like she wanted to say something, but because the person standing in front of her was an S- class beastman. And she didn’t actually have the courage to burn that bridge.

Chapter 95
My father, face iron-dark, grabbed both of them and pulled them back a step Then he glared at Silas and said. “You chose her. You’ll regret it.”
Silas hadn’t moved from his half-step beside me.
“No,” he said. “I’ll never regret it.”
Then he turned his head toward me. His voice dropped. “Want to eat somewhere else?”
I shook my head. “No. Why should I leave? This is a public restaurant.”
I took his hand. Walked past my parents. Past Phoebe. Followed the waiter toward a booth near the back of the room.
Purchase completed
We sat down. The waiter handed us menus. I ordered something, then closed it again.
I looked up at Silas. “Thank you for earlier.”
“What’s there to thank?” he said. “You’re my owner.” With that, he handed me a freshly poured glass of water.
–
I looked at his profile – the line of his jaw, the curve of his ear, the warm light catching the edge of his cheekbone – and leaned across the table.
I kissed his lips lightly.
He froze. His ears shot straight up.
Chapter 35
-He opened his mouth, probably to say something, but before he could, a sharp cracking sound rang out from the next booth. It was the sound of glass shattering.
I turned my head. All I caught was a slim figure pushing through the restaurant curtain and disappearing into the night.
Behind her, my parents hurried after.
I looked back at Silas. He was already looking at me.
We held eye contact for one second. Then we both started laughing.
Phoebe’s POV
I pushed through the front door, slammed it behind me, and kicked my heels off before I’d even stepped fully inside the hallway.
