Chapter 6
Aurora’s POV
My heart softened.
The way he’d buried his face against my shoulder, admitting his fears—I suddenly felt like we’d grown a lot closer.
And he wasn’t tense because he didn’t want me as his owner. It’s because he was nervous. And jealous.
Because he took this relationship very seriously.
Letting out a small sigh of relief, I placed a gentle hand on his arm, feeling the tension in his muscles beneath my palm.
“The werebeast you smelt…That was Connor,” I explained softly. “He was my previous werebeast. But he doesn’t live here anymore.”
Silas lifted his head from my shoulder slowly, his dark eyes searching my face.
“Did you…” he started, then seemed to struggle with the words. His jaw clenched. “Did you form a bond with him?”
I hesitated, the memory of Connor’s rejection still a fresh wound in my chest. Even now, days later, the humiliation still burned.
“No,” I admitted quietly, looking down at my hands rather than meeting his eyes. There’s a bitter taste in my mouth. “He changed his mind at the last minute. Said he couldn’t go through with it.”
Silas let out a low grumble. “He’s a complete idiot.”
A small laugh escaped my mouth.
“You don’t even know what happened,” I said, but I was smiling now, feeling good about his immediate defense of me.
“I don’t need to know the details,” Silas replied firmly, his hand coming down to hold my hands. “Anyone who would walk away from you is a fool.”
I felt my heart skip a beat.
I looked down and met with his dark eyes. He was staring at me with such intensity that it made me feel like…I was the most valuable thing to him in this whole world.
The air suddenly felt hot around us. I quickly looked away.
“Umm so…anyway, I’ll have the house deep-cleaned and sanitized,” I promised. “To get rid of Connor’s scent completely. I know it must be uncomfortable, smelling another male’s presence everywhere.”
“You don’t have to do that for me—”
“I want to,” I interrupted gently.
Then, I moved my hand up to rest on his head, running my fingers through his thick, dark hair.
His tiger ears suddenly popped out from his hair, trembling slightly under my touch. His breathing also sounded heavier.
“And Silas? You won’t scare me or hurt me. I trust you. So please… don’t hold yourself back from me.” I encouraged.
He nodded, and then leaned into my touch like he was starving for it, his eyes fluttering closed.
A low sound rumbled from deep in his chest, something between a purr and a growl that made my stomach flutter.
He nuzzled closer, pressing his face against my palm, his stubble rough against my skin.
The gesture was so intimate, so unexpectedly tender.
“Aurora,” he murmured against my palm. “Thank you.”
“…It’s nothing,” I cleared my throat. “Anyway, this is a great start. Try to be more honest with me from now on, OK? Now are you ready to see your room?”
Silas let me go reluctantly, his fingers trailing along my arm as I pulled away. I could tell he still wanted to snuggle with me. But he didn’t protest and just stood up and followed me upstairs.
“Here,” I said, opening the door to what I’d hoped would be his perfect sanctuary. “Ta-da.”
I’d spent a long time researching, consulting with werebeast specialists online. I introduced to him.
“I researched tiger preferences. It’s enclosed like a den, with thick walls for privacy and sound dampening. The lighting can be dimmed to almost complete darkness, and it’s away from my bedroom since tigers are naturally solitary creatures. I thought you’d appreciate having your own space. Do you like it?”
I turned to gauge his reaction and found him frowning slightly at the space.
“Is something wrong?” I asked, suddenly worried that I’d misunderstood something fundamental about his needs. “The walls can be repainted, and we can adjust the lighting system if it’s not right. I want you to be comfortable here.”
But even as I spoke, exhaustion was starting to hit me. I yawned, covering my mouth with my hand.
“It’s fine,” he said quietly. “You must be tired. Go rest.”
“Yeah, I really am,” I yawned again, my eyelids growing heavy. “Good night, Silas. Sleep well.”
I went back to my own bedroom, my feet practically dragging. The moment my head hit the pillow, I fell asleep right away.
But I woke up with a start just a few hours later—
Someone had slid into bed beside me.
The mattress dipped under unfamiliar weight, and I felt the warmth of another body settling next to mine.
My eyes flew open in the darkness, my heart jumping to my throat.
Then I found myself face to face with Silas’s silhouette.
“…Silas?” I whispered, my voice hoarse with sleep. “What are you doing?”
“I’m sorry. But I can’t help it,” he sounded almost frustrated. “Aurora, I…I want to sleep with my owner.”
“But…” I blinked, trying to process this through my sleep-fogged brain. “What about tiger habits? The solitary nature? I thought you’d want your own space.”
“Yes, that’s the tiger’s habits. But…” he shifted closer, the heat from his body reaching me. “It’s all werebeasts’ habits to be as close to our owner as possible.”
There was a pause, then he asked. “So may I? “
The slight nervousness in his voice, so at odds with his powerful presence, melted my heard completely.
How could I say no to that?
“Okay,” I whispered. “You win.”
He chuckled and settled beside me. His arm came around me, pulling me against his warm, solid chest.
Within minutes, lulled by his steady heartbeat and protective embrace, I drifted back into peaceful sleep.
I had such a sweet dream.
I should be able to sleep a couple more hours in the morning if an earth-shattering roar hadn’t bolted me upright in bed.
“Aurora? Who’s the fuck is that?!”
I jumped up and saw Connor standing in the doorway, glaring at me and Silas in full rage.
