Chapter 71
Aurora’s POV
The car pulled away from that quiet stretch of old warehouses.
Streetlights on the main road slid past the windows one after another, steady and even. The cabin was quiet except for the low hum of the engine.
Kane had both hands on the wheel, eyes forward. “What’s your plan for this new lead? Submit it straight to the Bureau?”
My thumb traced the edge of my phone screen. The blurry photos were still there–warehouse exterior, the ventilation grate, the outline of the black van. All taken from a distance. All useless without context.
“Not yet.” I shook my head. “All we have is the outside. No proof of what’s going on inside. Lucien is careful. If we report too early, he’ll move everything. Every lead we have will go cold.”
Kane nodded. He understood how this worked in the gray zones. “Fair enough. What’s next?”
I hesitated for a second.
Connor was still inside the Colosseum. He was the only person I had on the inside–close to the center of everything. I needed to reach him again. ‘Find out what that warehouse was really being used for.
The air in the car shifted the moment I said it out loud.
Kane glanced at me. “You’re going to contact Connor again.” Not a question.

“I don’t have another choice.” I tightened my grip on the phone. “He’s the only one who can tell me what’s happening inside that warehouse. But I know where the line is. I’m going to him for information. Nothing else.”
Kane’s tone stayed level. Professional. No edge of jealousy, no hidden meaning. “I trust your judgment. But you can’t go in alone. Connor sti!! has feelings for you, and Lucien’s peuple are everywhere around the Colosseum. That’s two risks at once. I can cover the perimeter.”
My first thought went to Silas.
He deserved to know everything. Every part of it. I couldn’t keep tonight from him.
“Take me home first. I need to tell Silas everything before I do anything else.”
Kane pulled up at the corner of my street, far enough from the building that the car wouldn’t be noticed. I pushed the door open and stepped onto the sidewalk.
“Stay safe. Contact me immediately if anything goes wrong.” His voice was low through the half–open window.
I nodded and turned toward the building.
The front door clicked open. The floor lamp in the living room was on, casting warm light across the room.
Silas was on the couch.
His ears were drooping. His tail swept back and forth across the carpet in a slow, restless rhythm. The moment he saw me, he was on his feet, crossing the room in two strides.
I didn’t waste time.

I told him everything. The stakeout at the unloading dock. Following the van. Finding Lucien’s warehouse. The conversation with Kane in the car The plan to contact Connor again for information. I held nothing back. Not the details, not Kane’s name, not the fact that it had been the two of us out there tonight.
Silas listened without interrupting. His expression shifted as I spoke- alertness at the mention of the warehouse, then something tighter, more complicated, when I said Kane’s name. But he didn’t explode. Didn’t raise his voice.
When I finished, he reached up and cupped my shoulders. His hands were warm. His eyes were dark and steady on my face.
“I’m not against you chasing the truth.” His voice was low, controlled. “But next time there’s a dangerous night operation like this, you don’t go without me. Kane can cover the perimeter all he wants. He can’t replace me.”
He paused. His tail stilled.
“Tomorrow, when you meet Connor–I’m going with you to the Colosseum. I stay outside. You go in, keep it short.”
I could see it in his eyes. The unease was there, just beneath the surface. Not anger. Something more honest than anger.
