I Was His Wife, Then His Widow, Then No One's But My Own novel Chapter 171

Sienna laughed on the other end of the line, her tone casual. "The way you say that makes it sound like I only call when I need something. Can't I just reach out to chat? We're best friends! I heard you were hurt, so of course I had to check on you."

Her words sounded breezy, but Nora couldn't detect a shred of sincerity in them.

Nora closed her eyes, her voice dropping. "If you don't have anything to say, I'm hanging up. I'm busy."

Sienna immediately caught the hint, her speaking pace quickening as if she feared Nora would actually end the call. "What are you busy with? I just got back from my business trip, so I'll come over to your place. I actually have something I want to talk to you about anyway."

A sense of anticipated clarity washed over Nora.

Just as she suspected, Sienna wouldn't reach out for no reason.

Leaning against the headboard, she replied with a flat tone, "Come over, then," before hanging up.

After exiting the call screen, she casually opened her social media feed.

Sienna had claimed to be away on business, and her profile was indeed set to only show the last three days of activity, leaving no obvious flaws on the surface.

However, Nora had spotted a group photo on Seraphina Shaw's feed a few days prior.

Standing right next to Seraphina, smiling brighter than anyone else, was none other than Sienna.

The betrayal of a friend felt like a heavy stone lodged in her chest, suffocating and dull.

She closed the app and tossed her phone onto the nightstand, refusing to look any further. She had already settled the score in her mind. Once Sienna paid back that 500,000 dollars, she would let this friendship quietly fade away. She would no longer hold any expectations for this so-called best friend.

Sienna looked her up and down before leaning in slightly, her voice laced with exaggerated concern. "Oh, right, weren't you hurt? Let me see where you got injured."

Nora gave a faint shake of her head, instinctively leaning back against the cushions to put some distance between them. "I'm fine. It's already healed."

Sienna frowned slightly. She could acutely sense that something about Nora had changed, but she couldn't quite put her finger on what it was.

In the past, Nora would have greeted her with a warm smile, hurried into the kitchen to grab coffee and snacks, and sat right next to her, linking their arms together to chat. Now, she was sitting across the coffee table, radiating a cold distance. Sienna assumed Nora was just throwing a tantrum because she hadn't checked on her for the past few days.

She pouted, letting out a fake huff of annoyance before bouncing off her seat and rounding the coffee table to press herself against Nora's side. She wrapped both hands around Nora's arm, shaking it like a spoiled child.

"Are you mad at me because I didn't call you during my trip? Don't be mad. You know how crazy busy I've been lately."
