I Was His Wife, Then His Widow, Then No One's But My Own novel Chapter 208

Even though he wasn't glaring at her with that hyper-critical scrutiny anymore, just sitting in his orbit was enough to make anyone nervous.

She unbuckled Bonnie from her booster seat, her voice returning to its usual cheerful lilt. "We're here. Let's get out."

Xander pulled the car into a temporary parking spot near the entrance, and Nora stepped out with Bonnie.

With her little backpack strapped tightly on, Bonnie stood by the gates, looking around frantically, her face flushed with pure excitement.

It didn't take long for Felix to catch up. After parking, he jogged all the way over, visibly out of breath, a thin sheen of sweat gleaming on his forehead.

Nora looked at his disheveled state in total confusion. "Felix, did you run all the way here?"

Felix didn't even bother answering. His eyes darted sharply through the crowd near the entrance before he lowered his voice. "Where's Xander?"

"He went to park the car," Nora replied.

Felix's brows snapped together in a fierce scowl. "I thought we agreed to go together. Why didn't you wait for me? Why did you leave with him?"

Nora gave him a baffled look. "But didn't you leave first? Mr. Harrison told me you were going to meet us here."

Felix opened his mouth, then abruptly clamped it shut. He let out a heavy sigh, deciding it wasn't worth arguing, but the knot in his chest pulled even tighter.

It was blatantly obvious that Xander had manipulated the situation to get Nora alone, and the worst part was that she was completely oblivious to it.

Moments later, Xander strolled over from the parking lot. His pace was completely relaxed, and he was still holding the wrapped sandwich Nora had given him. As he approached the group, his gaze briefly swept over Felix's face, a faint, mocking smirk playing on his lips.

Bonnie was instantly electrified by the spectacle. She ripped her hand away from Xander's, grabbed Nora by the wrist, and practically dragged her into the thick of the crowd. "Nora, let's go over there! Look at that huge teddy bear!"

Pulled forward by the sheer force of a determined child, Nora glanced back at the two men with a helpless, apologetic smile. "We're going to check that out!" she called over her shoulder, vanishing into the throngs of people toward the ring toss booth.

Once again, Xander and Felix were left alone.

Felix shoved his hands deep into his jacket pockets, his eyes locked on Nora, who was currently bending down to help Bonnie pick out throwing rings.

Xander stood quietly beside him, watching the exact same scene.

A moment later, Felix let out a cold, sharp laugh. "Mr. Harrison, I mistook you for an honest man."
